My td5 defender seems to lack power if your setting off at the bottom of the hill when changing from 1st to 2nd it will do it but don't seem right to me, anyone had this problem or know what it could be please?

MAF sensor might be faulty, you could have a clogged up MAP sensor which is easy to remove from the intake manifold, its only held in with two 8mm bolts, clean it with brake cleaner and refit. Unplug the MAF sensor which is located on the top of the outlet hose between the air box and turbo, and you might find power will be restored, if that's the case just replace the sensor with a genuine VDO unit.
The above is presuming all the intake hoses have no leaks and the air filter is reasonably clean.

Couple of other ideas. Turbo wastegate - unclip the rod to the vacuum pot and check it moves freely. TD5 performance can also be a bit sluggish when the fuel is not flowing freely, especially when it's pointing uphill. So it could be worth having a look at the usual things like pump, filter, condition of hoses and connectors for leaks etc.
