out playing today at bunny lane and my mates defender td5 is making a loud buzzing noise from what i guess is the fuel pump located nr the rear wheelarch

it can be heard all the time, there also an intermittant fault with the engine cutting out and then he has to restart pumping the accelerator to get it fired up again

now im not familier with the td5 engine so im asking the font of all knowledge as to what the possible faults could be

ive searched on ere but couldnt find anything specific

fanks i a:)

Sounds like air in the fuel or knackered fuel pump. The usual reasons ar blocked fuel filter, Blocked fuel pump strainer, knackered fuel pump, knackered copper washers on injectors, leaking fuel pressure regulator, hole in fuel line etc.

I also have a noisy fuel pump but still runs fine on td5 90 any ideas how long the fuel pump will last

Now this could be a mad notion all together but if he changes the fuel filter first and it just might fix the problem cheaply.

Sorry forgot to mention I do have a fuel leak as well probably from the fuel pressure regulator would this affect the fuel pump as well cheers

Go stand in the corner ya useless git.:rolleyes::rolleyes::p

Yep. It will cause excess fuel pump noise. If you look at the list I posted for wilts landyman you will see the reasons for the noise.

Hi Mr Ratty Sir,

I think he should fit a new fuel filter first of all . . . and I know that no-one else will have thought of that.

In all these cases it is important to make the difference between TWO sources of the bad noise,
1. from the fuel pump itself, in the tank
or
2. from the FUEL FILTER HEAD.

Noise from the filter head is almost always due to GAS or AIR in the fuel.

Gas from a leaking injector copper washer, air from being sucked in somewhere.

PS - did I mention to try a clean new fuel filter first?

Evening Charles:)

Yep. I agree with you about about it being gas or air in the fuel. In the case of mac80 he rekons he has a leaking FPR which would be my first port of call even before changing the fuel filter. In the case of WLM's mate then I agree that fuel filter would be top of my list.

How are things with you? Have you got your tow rope at the ready this year?;):)

Yep!

Two in the Disco (short & long) and fours spares all splices and ready.

I reckon it might soon be time to fit my General Grabber AT-2 tyres.

Blooming chilly getting in the nights here.

It's still not too bad temperature wise down here. It's only this last week that I've started lighting the fire.

We best get some heavy snow again this winter or I'm not gonna be impressed.:p

Sounds like the injector seals are leaking air into the fuel system .
should be easy and cheap to fix
get them fixed soon ,or you WILL break down somewhere
