2 Days ago when my dad went to pick my mum up from work he got his 2002 110 TD5 started up sounded rough. He thought maybe the cold night halfway down the street it lost power so pulled into bus lane and towed it back home. Realizing it was fuel related he looked throught the haynes manual and saw maybe the fuel cut off switch had been tripped so pressed that and it clicked so it must have been set off. It started up first time sounded really bad and died tried couple more times kept dying. New genuine filter put on today think £40 (yeah rip off). It started ran it on tickover for a few minutes sounded good but then died as soon as he went to give it a small run. What could it be?? any thoughts because he reckons a garage job as the TD5 is all electric

Thanks for reading:)

Injector copper washer(s) leaking gas up into fuel gallery is a prime suspect.

This is a straightforward DIY job, but MUST be done very carefully, and the injectors must go back in the same holes they came from.

He saw a landrover mechanic today who has suggested that the pump is fooked. Not sure if thats a DIY job or best left to the mechanic to fix

Not easy to get to the pump but simple enough to change yourself.
You can drop the tank down from underneath or some peeps cut an access hole in the rear floor. The TD5 tanks dont have a drain plug so wait until you're near empty or syphon out most of the fuel to reduce the weight of the tank.
I drilled out the rivets and spot welds and removed the whole rear bed which makes access easy. It also allows you to examine and paint your rear chassis etc. I just used some clear silicone as a sealant and re-riveted the bed back down with pop rivets. Next time I need it out I'll just drill the rivets again.

Is he ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that the fuel filter isn't choked?
Just because it was changed yesterday, last week, last month, last year, means NOTHING in a TD5. ONE litre if dirty fuel half an hour ago and the filter is ruined, and the whole fuel system goes down the pan.

Get a new one - any kind, even a cheapo Britpart, fit it, prime the system and try again.

Mine conked out and would not re-start on M6 Toll a year last July, but I had three spare filters in the back. 15 minutes later, back on the road as if nothing had happened.

ALL TD5 owners should carry at least TWO new fuel filters all the time. One Britpart filter at £5 could save days of grief and hundreds of pounds.
I carry two cheapo filters and a Landy Original at THIRTY FIVE POUNDS!
I haven't got the heart to fit a £35 filter yet.

I got 10 Bearmach filters off eBay for £60 delivered. Never had a problem with any of them so far.

an easy way to check the fuel pump is opperating properly is to take off the fuel filter, turn on the ignition and diesel should start flowing out of the filter bracket, makes a bit of a mess though.. im currently dealing with the same problem, changed the filter, 20 miles down the road i had the same problem, left it for an hour, and then drove another 30 odd miles no bother, im still worried about it too though so if anyone can put a finger on the problem im sure me and kennyb87 would be delighted:)

No need to take filter off - just remove the water drain/sensor plug in the bottom of the fuel filter and stick a bucket under it. Turn on the ignition and see if fuel is pumping out. Not so messy.

Only had the 110 for 7 month or something and the pump had been making an audible whining kind of noise for some time. Dont think he thought anything of it until it failed, its away getting sorted just now or at least it had better have been the pump or my dad is gonna be MAD

Picked up today it was the harness from the injectors or something the guy said he showd us the part it was caked in oil so wasnt a big expensive new pump at all £194 pounds. So me dad is pretty happy now the fender is back in action

When TD5 fuel pumps make whining noises it is as often as not telling you to

CHANGE THE FUEL FILTER!

A dirty filter obstructs the fuel FLOW, and as the TD5 fuel pump is pumping well over a GALLON of fuel PER MINUTE at 60 psi, any obstruction forces the pump to work harder, which puts it under strain.

Plan ... buy a box of a dozen cheapo filters, fit one, and carry two or three in the car all the time.

It's an easy roadside fix when it blocks IF, BUT ONLY IF, you have a spare filter there and then.

Spot on. The fuel filter does not have a bypass so once its clogged you're stuffed. Filters are cheap and easy to replace. Pumps are 'kin expensive and a bastard to change.

Mine went out like a light on the M6 Toll a year ago.
Cruised 300 miles as nice as you like, slowed down to pay the toll, engine stops and won't restart.
"Aha" thinks I, "fuel bloody filter."

Got pulled to the side, changed filter, primed system, fired her up and drove away as if nothing had happened. 15 minutes.

IF you have a clean spare filter in the back ...
