Im needing someone with a nanacom or similar to investigate my rough idle from cold,
Dont mind paying for someone's time,
and a brief outline of symptoms are, just had my head re-conned, with new waterpump, thermostat and fuel pressure regulator, all timed up properly,
but on start up seems to be missing(not the usual 5th cylinder catching up) idles rough until warmed up then back to normal.
Once i touch the accelerator, it doesnt miss at all whether hot or cold,
Im thinking injector fault, so would like to test there operation with fault reader

hi, are the fender and disco td5 unlock codes not the same for both vehicles

not on Hawkeye ...i dunno how nanocom works...which year is your fender? ... if it's from the latest Td5's you might be able to read exclusively engine management data with a generic code reader (which is much common)...worth a try.

its a 1999 fender td5

without the use of a tester at the minute, what effect on fuelling does the coolant temp sensor have, and could it be damaged by overheated engine when head gasket let go

I dunno exactly on fender but as there are ECU's which are the same for D2 and Defender i suppose the theory is the same, anyway you can check it usind a thermometer and an Ohmmeter, see attachment and u'll understand. It's quite cheap so if u suspect it u better replace it with a new one than struggle with those measurements...and those measurements are relevant if you make them at the ECU plug to rule out the wiring issues to at the same time

im getting pretty sure this is an injector issue, as all week ive been running it around with some forte diesel system cleaner in the fuel and ive got to say the idle seems to of steaded itself a little bit, but thought id give it a run on the motorway to speed the cleaner through it, and it pulled well to 70mph and seemed to have plenty left , but in true landy style the rear prop came apart, AHHHHH,
the uj looks to be in perfect condition but the cap and circlip are missing from the housing and the metal is a bit deformed around there, so new prop time

i had a problem with an injector once,... it blowed "puffs" of black smoke when the timing was on that injector (the tester showed it way out of balance)...usually injector faults generate black smoke cos the fuel is not well pulverized and the fuel remains unburnt.

are you sure it's not a wiring issue(even injector loom failure) cos:
The EUI can fail as follows:
l Open circuit.
l Short circuit to voltage supply.
l Short circuit to vehicle earth.
l Wiring loom fault.
l Connector water ingress.
l Connector failure due to excess heat.

In the event of a fuel injector failure any of the following symptoms may be observed:
l Engine misfire.
l Idle faults.
l Reduced engine performance.
l Reduced fuel economy.
l Difficult cold start.
l Difficult hot start.
l Excess smoke.

I've pm'd accy, waiting for a reply

Failing that Ratty and MHM should have Accy's number for a genuine reason as yours is- I can't see them not giving you his number and I'm not going to go stalking to find it:p

right, ive had it plugged into my new hawkeye(Xmas present), only fault codes were old ones, 3001- fuel temp low, an 3002- coolant temp low,
3120-high speed crank synch loss logged( i turned the key with the engine already running)
and egr stuck closed, well the egr has been removed so that is probably that.
After clearing the codes only egr one comes back,
I still have the rough running when starting from cold and cylinder roughness is

no1 -5 to +8
no2 -6 to +6
no3 -4 to +13
no4 -12 to +10
no5 -7 to +20

anyone shed any light on them

AFAIK
1. for both "temp low" codes check the plugs/give a contact spray to the involved sensors(ECT-the one from the coolant elbow and FT-the one from FPR) these sensors are the same type and if the ECT signal fails the ECU takes the values from the FT and if the FT fails it takes a default value from memory...if they will not come back maybe it was just a short contact loss some time... read the codes again soon to make sure
2. if the EGR is removed you will always get the stuck closed fault no matter what you do...unless you want to go so far to build a signal emulator to replicate a good EGR modulator output.
3. the roughness signals are not the best( between +/- 10 is desirable) ...nr 5 always is worst cos it wears out faster due to the absence of the glowplug on it.

be prepared to replace injector 5 then 4 when it gets worst...untill then a treatment could help, not ordinary cleaner(worked for me), this one METABOND MEGASEL FUEL ADDITIVE IMPROVE DIESEL ENGINES ECONOMY CLEAR INJECTORS | eBay

thanks Sierraferry,
just remembered also said that i have an idle speed error of +30-40rpm, with engine idling around 775 rpm,
would that be related to the injectors also
