Hello

I am trying to change my auxilary belt and want to remove the viscous fan.

I cannot unscrew it, the pulley turns and I can't jam it.

Any suggestions please?

Get the proper spanners. Look on D2 Boys Club and you'll find them there. They make this job a doddle.

The pulley, one on the nut and one on the pulley.

You are turning it the right way arn't you? it's a standard thread not a left hander.

put a pry bar or similar wedged between one of the small bolts and pulley, quick smack with a hammer on the spanner and it should come off. Normal thread as mentioned i.e. whack it to the left as you look at it, caution!!! protect the rad in case you miss with hammer

Was trying in correct direction!

Ended up using a small crow bar on the small bolts to jam it then whack with a hammer.

New aux belt now fitted.

Thanks

Martin

If you don't want to wait for the above tool. Hit each flat with a chisel. Had to do mine like that.

Edit. Oooops just seen you've sorted it.

Do you have a link please?

However severely tempted by an electric fan, my last car had 3!!!!!!

Just put electric fan on my td5 90, though they run happy under normal conditions with out a fan. Run mine for ages without one. yours a disco or defender.

that's not ''healthy'' on a long run... the gauge leaves the middle at 120*C and you'll be amazed how ''happily'' a td5 is running at 105-110*C and you don't even notice it ...just realise after some 10k miles that you have a cracked head or something... maybe in UK's weather the electric fan is enough but where the temperature exceed 25*C a viscous fan is compulsory as the electric can't cool enough... I know from my own experience

No need to remove the fan to change the auxiliary belt. Just a socket on the tensioner ;)

Whilst the belts off check your idler pulleys are ok  :D :D :D

Mine siezed resulting in needing noo belt, noo idler pulley and noo crank pulley

You can but much much easier with the fan out the way.

I have had the same problem at the weekend when I needed to change the auto gearbox cooler pipes on my D2. The fan was stuck solid.

I have the 36mm fan spanner so tried hitting that really hard, in the correct direction (lefty loosey) but started to round off the nut. Looked on hear for advice and saw that there is a special tool to hold the pulley still but due to where I live went for the hit it with a chisel on each of the flats of the nut in turn, as already mentioned in the thread and off she popped.:D
