My Disco TD5 engine just simply stopped the other day, as if someone just whipped round the keys while I was going along... no splutter no loss of power, just a dead stop with no warning lights

30mph on the dot, lift off the throttle for a roundabout and steering goes heavy and brakes dont work, normal position 1 ignition lights come on the dash. coast around the roundabout, engine wont restart for love nor money.

Since then:

I have changed the fuel pump for a spare, a then changed it back.
I have chucked another 30litres of fuel in the tank as it was a little bit low.
I have checked the fuel filter for leakages.
I have checked every fuse under the bonnet with a meter
I have changed the crank sensor for a new one
I have checked the fuel cutout impact switch
I have tested the output on the new and the old crank sensor with a meter and they both read the same.
I have tested the wiring loom on the crank sensor for continuity and shorts between the connector and the ECU.
I have cleaned out the small amount of oil from the ECU plug (Injector harness was changed recently to a newer 'no oil' one)
I have removed the fuel pressure regulator and checked the gallery input micro fuel filter for blockages, I have run up the fuel pump and watched it spurt into a bucket from the FPR pipe return.
I have used nanocom to test every function possible, and sent test signals to all the injectors and both felt them all soleniod click and heard them with the rocker cover removed.
I have probed the ECU for security status, and it comes back 'not immobalised' and with no faults logged

I have cranked and cranked it and run the purge procedure so many times. I have been though three fully charged batteries today trying to get it to run!

I am all out of ideas, it still wont start...

It just stopped with no warning, and no MIL or dashwarnings and now it wont go anymore.

Can anyone help?

Hi by the way, long time no see!:)

possibly, but nanocom will test every output functionality of the ECU of which they all pass, the injector loom was changed less than a year ago and test firing the injectors seems to work. I also get the same injector soleniod click when I turn it over on the starter, obviously more frequent though.

mine did too...

wow Foss, such a similar scenario, cheers... I will get the ECU checked. It does have a stage 1 fuel map tune on it though, wouldn't want to loose that!!!

It had simply run out of fuel, however there lies the problem, running out of diesel and purging only works if you are aware of the TWO purge processes of the TD5 and the order in which you need to do them. The first purges air from the gallery and fuel lines, the second purges air from the injectors. Simply not knowing the second injector purge process was the only problem and as it's ECU controlled, you probably wouldnt fluke it.

TD5 owners need to be aware of two purge processes!

1. Deck the throttle 5 times until the MIL light stops flashing, this purges the head, fuel gallery, filters and lines.
2. Deck the throttle before turning the key and keep it decked, this signals the injector purge process, crank for 30 seconds, switch off for 15 seconds, repeat until it fires.

Luckily it's not cost me anything more than plenty of **** taking!
