td5 common problems

There was a issue with injector washers not sealing correctly and ECU looms being contaminated with oil and the heads used to move as they used plastic dowels but to be honest if it's done 165000 all these issues will have been ironed out. The fuel pressure regulator could leak too, but none of these issues were really "big" problems as far as repairs go.

Like any vehicle, look for signs of maintenance.

Regular servicing seems to be key, so go for the one with the best service history. 15p engines were later than the 10p units so would have ironed out alot of the problems. Generally seem to be a strong motor with heaps of potential.
A stage 1 tune helped me to iron out the flat spot on low revs when pulling away. If I was to tune further on my 10p I would need to check for nylon dowels under the head, but it's done 110, 000 so far without too much going wrong.
As Discomania said: injector loom; fuel pressure regulator; and I have had a new water pump and starter motor. All DIY so relatively easy to work on.

Walk away from any TD5 with signs of diesel in the sump unless you want to spend big bucks fixing it. There are plenty of good ones out there.
TD5s are sensitive to overheating so make sure the cooling system is tip top.
Regular oil changes every 5k miles will keep the TD5 engine running like a sewing machine.
Other than that they are a good strong engine with oodles of potential in terms of tuning.

thanks chaps,he is another gas engineer whos ringing me asking what to look for,he test drove it today and said it pulls like a train and is solid underneath but judders on taking up drive in 1 st told him dmf could be on the way out budget a grand to fix it,this about right?will pass these comments on to him

Noisy whining fuel pumps in the tank will need tlc
Used to cut hatches in load bed floors like on disco 2
Easy access to tank and pump removal
9 times out of 10 you could clean the algae off the outer and after partial dismantle inner gauze on the pump
So long as it hadn't been long term it would sort it
Saw a td5 90 with a piston through number 4 side of the block the owner had used basic non synthetic oil and was a rough arse, the whole truck was like a banger racer
