TD5 Auto rattle.....

Hi, if anyone can shed some light on a rattle I have (sounds like a resononce of a heat sheild) I have checked everything that could be loose and even changed the front and mid sections of the exhaust as I thought the cat or baffles had gone but this made no difference. Upgarded to a straight though system anyway so thats a bonus! Anyway this rattle is about at 2500 rpm and won't make any noise outside of this... Any help?

I have the same on one of mine. I'm going to check the heatshield over the turbo for looseness. I have already established there is a heatshield under the gearbox, protecting one of the rubber mounts, that is only fixed at one end so could be vibrating.

Did you ever solve this? My new TD5 has the same rattle (sounds just like a heat shield rattling) from inside the vehicle at 2500RPM. Would be interested if you ever got to the bottom of it before I start taking things to bits

Hello James, no I really never got to the bottom of the noise issue. I checked various heat-shields but none of them were the source. That car has now gone.

However, you might be interested in what I found on my latest TD5 auto another 1999.

Between 2200 and about 2500 I get a noise that I can only describe as a "courseness" in the engine sound. I get this whether I'm in gear or neutral so it must be engine related. I have read that this is quite possibly an indication of the front and rear engine mounts being worn, allowing vibrations to pass into the chassis and therefore the car.

I ordered some rear mounts (because they are loads cheaper) and I will attempt to fit them this week and see if there is any difference.

On a more general front I have learned that the std Torque Converter on pre-facelift (may apply to post as well) is somewhat under specc'd in that in has an inappropriately high stall speed which allows the TC to slip away like a banshee on speed.

Ashcrofts take a v8 TC and modify it's drive plate making it much stronger (therefore more reliable) - the benefits appear to be a much more unified feel to the engine/gearbox combo with less slip and more drive, with better mpg as a result.

My plan is to do this mod and I will replace the triangular flex plate at the same time, so that should quieten things down and give a better driving experience.

I will be very interested if you find the new engine mounts make a difference as I have exactly the same symptom and its always bugged me a bit as I find the Disco is very relaxing to drive apart from that gruff vibration. Had exhaust and a few other things investigated but to no avail. Incidentally I just fitted some grabber UHPs partly on your recommendation in one of your older posts and really like em so far so cheers!

theres a big wieght fastened to rear of t/box behind hand brake it reduces vibration ,the stud there fastened to comes loose sometimes

got a rattle on mine at 2500 revs that sounds like a heatshield .On closer inspection found it to be coming from handbrake drum.When driving,if i lift the handbrake up just before it starts to bite the noise does not appear. So i took out the brake shoes and took it for a spin and the rattle had gone.Replaced shoes and springs and noticed the spring that holds the top seperator bar to the backplate was missing before.When put back together and run it is a lot better but still has slight rattle.If anyone has a suggestion how to stop it completely I would like to know. Hi Richard, thanks very much for the input - I've just test-driven mine using the handbrake lightly and nothing changed.

So tomorrow weather-permitting I'll be installing the two new gearbox mounts and we'll see how things are.

Well today the weather did permit. Unfortunately my parts suppliers didn't!!!

He sent me the correct unit for the right hand side but an incorrect one for the left.

Anyway the RH is now installed, the rubber does seem firmer than the old one and I've prepared all the fixings so the left one should be easier to do.

To be honest having done it once I would say it's an easy job to do - fixings permitting and for the cost of the Bearmach mounts at £9 apiece I would recommend anyone with an older/high mileage D2 to do this.

Don't want to say too much about the rattle/engine coarseness until I've done the other side, but it's looking good.
