Engine out or drop the gearbox and why?

Not answering as I did gearbox last time but would try engine next. If you have any jobs to do on engine (like leaking sump) then no-brainer!
 
Definitely gearbox, have done a couple this way. I also spit the transfer-box and gearbox, it may take a fraction longer but it makes things a lot easier when working on your own as the gearbox is then balanced when suspended on engine crane.

you can balance the transmission as a whole suspended from an engine crane
 
hang a chain on the the top rhs t/box to g/box securing stud,its a little front heavy but easy enough to lift front up to align in the clutch

Thanks. That also explains why I am struggling, I am using slings wrapped around the casings. When separated this is fine but not when a single unit.
