Good or bad points of them?

It's covered 169,000 Km... or am I buying something that will be more trouble than my Disco 1?

:boink:

A DII TD5 is different from your TDi 300 but not necessarily more trouble. However what you will need is some sort of LR-dedicated diagnostic terminal.

169k kms is only just over 100,000mls so nothing at all - hardly run in !!!

What is the favorite diag tool for these?

The tools most popular in Europe are the Hawkeye and the Nano Evo.Do a Google search to get the full specs for them. Also visit The D2 Boys Club.

The two units are about £300 each which might seem quite a lot, but in this newer electronic age they are indispensable.

They overlap in some areas and give different facilities in others so you need to research them to decide which 'package' sounds best.

Onto the more general topic, TD5 are very nice daily vehicles and very competent on and off-road. They will cruise comfortably at 110kph all day long and consume approx 8-9lts/100kms or about 28-30mpg (UK gallon 4.54ltrs).

Re towing I have towed another DII on a trailer so approx 3.5tons and it did it easily - not fast but within it's capabilities. Mine was an autobox car and I found that using '3' rather than 'D' helped alot as you still get Torque converter lock-up in '3'.

They are also excellent off-road even as std. but there is a huge range of off-road kit if that is or becomes your thing.

IF you decide to buy one my advice is to get the highest spec possible as you will enjoy the greater comfort long after you've forgotten any price difference. Also if you buy one, go through it from front to back straight away as soon as you get it, invest some time and money rectifying known issues and you'll have an excellent reliable vehicle.

God luck in your search

Dave

I think the topic of what to look for on TD5 Discos has been covered quite a few times on here. Do a search and you'll get the craic you need. :)
