Having fixed the lack of turbo boost a new problem. See P1e30 thread.

With the extra grunt, at about 2k rpm and about when the TC locks, very deep throated vibration.
I've put some Dr whatsits transmission shudder fix in and it did improve for a while but was also down on power so not showing itself due to the other fault.

Is it the TC locking clutch? Anyone had similar. Can be cured by down shifting the auto, but horrid vibes when it doesn't down shift.

Almost certainly the TC lock up clutch. Try another tube of Dr Tranny's shudder fix, as there's a lot of fluid in the Jatco to treat. ;)

O. K. I could change the TC, didn't know if it was separate. Thanks.
Still not sure why manuals say the TC mustn't be removed!! I'll have to remove it to change it!!

If you're just removing the gearbox for access, then there's no real reason to remove the TC from the box, especially as removing it could damage the oil seal.

However it's not difficult to remove, as it's only held in by a couple of spline shafts, so can be simply pulled out the box. Be prepared for a deluge of fluid though, once the spines are free from the box.

OK thanks. Will put another 1 or 2 shots of Dr Trannys. Will put a new TC on work list for next year. There is one on ebay that is reportedly only 2 months old!!! Will find out the story.

After using with the oil additive in things have not really improved. Just been Devon to Kent and back. All fab at 60 plus but long inclines are painful due to vibration and needing to downshift.

Could it be that the auto fluid needs changing? Did it about 50k ago but is it worth a go before consigning the TC to the scrap heap?
Or am I dreaming of a simple answer!!???

Is this vibration as though the box is not sure what gear it should be in (3rd or 4th) and is cured with a blip of throttle?

It when the TC is locked and acceleration is applied but not enough to change down. Worse on inclines.
Applying boot and change down solves the vibration.
Looking out for a low mileage TC but may change fluid first. Just wondered if anyone else had found this a solution!

It sounds very similar to the behaviour that mine has sometimes. Generally slight inclines, and either easing off or applying power stops it. It very much comes and goes on mine and it may be many months when it doesn't do it, and then it seems to occur on every hill on every drive for a few weeks. I don't know if this helps or not but mine has been doing it for six or seven years and I looked into it when it first started but because it's so occasional I began to live with it. 70k miles later and the box is still going strong and is otherwise nice and smooth (apart from the odd firm gear change).

*edit*
P.S. fluid changes always seem to invigorate the box. Well worth doing.

Does it vibrate all the time, or only when the TC locks up.
A TC clutch fault only appears for a second or so when the TC locks, after which it goes away, until the next time the TC clutch locks again.

So, once it has started to vibrate which appears to be when the TC locks, it will carry on badly vibrating until:
I boot it to change down.
The hill ends.
I ease off and reduce the work being done by the engine.

Maybe a fluid change will do the job in that case??

That sounds like the TC clutch is slipping, which means it's fubar.
I'd try a fluid change, as it's so cheap to do, but otherwise its a replacement TC, maybe even mild box rebuild while it's out?

Thanks, thought as much.
Is there a way to get all the fluid out of the TC while changing it?
e.g. engine running when draining??
Would like to give it a fresh start and see how it goes.

When you remove the TC, the fluid in it remains in it.
You'll be fitting a replacement TC, which will be empty, so effectively the box gets a full fluid change, as you'll need to add almost the full fluid capacity, to bring it up to level. ;)

Agreed, what I was checking was whether there was a way to replace all fluid and try the old TC out on all new fluid before changing it?

Could I dis the cooler pipe and empty via that?

Anyone worked out a way of draining all the auto fluid from the torque convertor whilst gearbox is still in place??
