    Hi Guys
Just purchased my first 2002 Freelander TD4, however never trusting garages I've decided that the oil need changings, having read thou loads of very informative posts, the only bit of information I don't seem able to find is what size socket do I need to purchase to remove the oil filter, I'm sure this seems a simple question to most of you

You need the 36mm socket that is meant for the oil filter. It will cost about £6 and will soon pay for itself if you are going to do your own oil changes. WIX filters fit the spigot well.

Thanks for the information, now on my way to purchase socket. Cost not a problem has I do tend to do more oil changes than recommended on my vehicles

Maybe not needed for you but if you have troubles to remove the oilfilter cap from over the unit so that you can get hold of the filter, I have to undo the tube in which the dipstick is located, a 10 mm bolt, then I can slightly push that tube aside and can the cap come through.

Check the thread titled - Alternator Fire - and cover up the alternator before pulling the oil-filter element out.
