Hi everyone,

I've been given a 2005 td4 freelander with about 150k miles on it. Its been parked for almost a year due to a lack of power problem
I've been and revived the car and driven it home (just about), it seems to be flat and misfiring up till about 3k rpm then seems to take off leaving a cloud of black smoke. I know the vehicle hasn't been serviced in a while, this is one of the next things I'm going to do to it before it goes anywhere near the road again

Anyone got any ideas on the misfiring?

I'm gonna take the egr valve off tomorrow and clean it, as I've heard that if the valve doesn't set properly it can cause all sorts of issues

Thanks in advance,

James

Injectors, test those for fuel draw
Fuel rail sensor dirty/bad connection

Tend to be the most common causes of strange over/under revving

Where is it idling, and is it doing it there?

Unplug the MAF and try it again. It will put the warning light on, but if power is restored, you know you need a new (only buy genuine Bosch) MAF.

I done that last weekend and forgot to post it. I’ve unplugged the maf and power is restored but occasionally sounds like it’s getting a bit of diesel knock mainly when it’s cold

So you need to replace the MAF then. ;) Only use a genuine Bosch MAF, as cheap ones are normally worse than an old Bosch. The MAF only lasts 60 to 80 K miles, so if it's done more than that, it's dead anyway.
