Hi my TD4 runs great pulls well and generally does not smoke at all......except when starting from stone cold............
It takes around 6 seconds to start and when it does I get blue grey smoke that smells of diesel.....once the smoke clears after say 2 seconds things are great.

I do have some theories on this .... when my fuel pumps went down the RAC did their best to get the TD4 going......as part of their checks they checked the the glow plug operation. They could not detect current draw...with their meter, and said glow plugs were not operating.

Now on one occiasion when it failed to start....I did clean the contacts to the CTS and bingo it started. I am suspecting the CTS may ultimately be dodgy ...... making the ECU try and fire the engine on an average setting....so when cold loads of fuel gets dumped while cranking....until there is sufficiebnt heat for some form of smoky combustion.......

When I purchased the car (not long ago)it had a leak test done on the injectors and one was replaced.

Has anybody had a CTS sensor go or cause problems.....your advice would be welcome.

Hi I am at my wits end......recently bought a TD4 Freelander....105k miles
Shortley after purchasing starting in cold very difficult.....in the end refused to go at all.
I'm really fed up ......... I hope somebody can hopefully help me....

How recently bought? Give it back as unfit for purpose until they fix it and take a another car as a run around whist they do!

Dont forget its not just fuel but air too that runs an engine...

Hi thanks for your comment........yes of course it is going to be returned.......and a this is a real hassel.

You didn't take it back then?

Hi I have had an ongoing battle.....where upon the the car dealer has spent over £1300 quid on pumps etc etc. The trouble is he is not nearby when I return the car it is perfect .... it's qinda an intermittent thing I have already lost shed loads of time getting this far. I can see I'm going to get nowhere fast. As I say all the pumps are done, filter replaced, fuel lines replaces...........I am fairly experienced with petrol cars....I am convinced it is something relatively straight forward.

has the glow plugs been checked? or even changed to rule them out

as for the CTS, its a min price part and easy enough to change.
