Hi,

I am new to this forum and have recently purchased an 04 plate TD4 with 100,000 miles on the clock.

I am looking for some advice, I have searched this site and the internet but cannot seem to find anyone with this same problem, so am wondering if anyone on here can help.

The TD4 has started making a knocking sound when braking. The sound is hard to describe but it sounds a bit like a clicking/knocking/clunking, the sound is in time with the roatation and decelerates as the vehicle slows down.

The clunking can be felt through the brake pedal. It only seems to happen when braking, but not engine braking.

It seems to start after about 5 mins of driving. and seems to be coming from the front, its dificult to tell where but it sounds like it may be coming from front centre.

I have done the vcu test by jacking up the drivers wheel and the vcu turns fairly freely, as i am paranoid it may be the IRC or something really expensive.

Has anyone had a similar problem or can shed any light on this?

Ricky

`Howya , welcome .

I would guess drop links, but I cant remember mine making any odd noises while braking . Could be shocks need replacing . Are you sure it isn't the ABS kicking in , I used to find that gear slipping feeling very odd and backed off on the brakes .

I have to rush out , take no notice of the f----ers who come on and tell you to get to the introduce youself section first before asking questions .

Oh , do a search .:welcome2:

Diff mounts?
Or, guess it is funny, but a long time ago I let winter tires mount by the supplier. The wheelnuts were not fastend tight enough and after a few days I also had a strange noise when braking. I checked the wheelnuts and they were not fasten enough. Since I do it myself and check after a few km again.

knackerd brake discs, usually on the inside especially if its been sitting unused for a period before you purchased it.

I have exactly the same problem. I suspect the front calipers are seizing up and have given the pins a good dose of wd40 and freed them off with a g-clamp to wind the pistons back in.. also check if the back brakes are working as if not, the front can be overloaded on long descents...

Or sell it and buy a shogun instead
