This sounds like typical camshaft sensor failure.

UKspicer - a faulty can sensor will make it difficult to start as your description.
A completely kaput can sensor would make it well nigh impossible to start.

Hi webley, and thanks for asking.
The trusty Freelander is still with me - haven't sold it yet - not sure what price to ask for a well maintained 115K mileage 2004 54 reg TD4.
Seeing as how I love BMW 2 litre engines so much -I've got myself a BMW 320d M-Sport.
I've got winter tyres on it and can't wait for some decent snow - we have some forecast for Monday.
You will have some "fun" in the snow with that! Make sure you put your freelader for sale up here. We all know how well it's been looked after

Why sell it.
Just tax it for the winter and spend the summer tinkering.
You will miss it if you sell it cheap.
I know the tax is expensive,but if you are over 50 like me the insurance is buttons.
