TD4 Fuel pressure sensor confusion

Hi Folks

I have some confusion over the TD4 fuel pressure sensor.

Read lots and gathered the part number is LR009732.


Got a new boxed LR part from ebay but its different from the original.
Its shorter than the original.


When I fitted, it bolted up OK but fuel pi55ed out so I put the original back on for now.
I read about o ring needed (MYX000040) but I can't see how this would help as the tip does not seal against anything, the original seems to have an adapter fitted to the fuel rail... plus the original did not have an o ring fitted and it does not leak.


Anyone got any experience of this, is this the right part and should I use something to seal it (equivelant to PTFE from the plumbing world?)



The reason I am tackling this is, its all part of troubleshooting poor starting and white smoke. I won't bore you with the list of things I have changed just yet :)

Definately no to PTFE.

You know after unbolting the sensor, there is another section, arent you meant to unbolt that and fit in another bit of metal? Then the metal o ring goes onto end of the sensor.

I had the modified sensor fitted at main dealer, only got a couple of mile diesel spewing out. They had fitted wrong one, they also fitted the new plug by crimping the wires to old loom. they missed with the crimps causing problems, then they soldered the wires, this did'nt work as the old loom wires packed in. They should have wired the plug direct back to the ecu, which was done by a diesel specialist.
 
Hi I have recently carried out this sensor replacement.
I fitted the new shorter version the same as yours.

In the box with the sensor, there ahould be a new attenuator (like a pipe olive with a hole going through it) and a small metal crush washer- but no o ring.

Remove the old sensor like you have, and remove the adaptor going into the fuel rail.

This will expose the old attenuator which you MUST replace with your new one. Be careful to seat the attenuator correctly and refit the adaptor.

Finally place the little crush washer onto the end of your new sensor (there is a step machined on the end for it to sit on) and screw into the adaptor on the fuel rail. As you tighten up the sensor this washer crushes to seal it up.

I also fitted the new harness plug kit while I was there as I had lots of corrosion inside it. Easy job do a search on here!

I do have the attenuator (olive thing) but I don't have the crush washer... anyone know the correct part number for that?

I previously removed the adapter and there was nothing inside, I assume the attenuator will be lodged inside the fuel rail...I didn't look at the time... is it simply a case of prying it out carefully with a screwdriver?


(I already changed the harness early on as its one of the cheaper things on the list)

I thought it was a doo-hickey!

But yeah if you dont fit the doo-hickey, it tends to be fine at idle , but rev it and its spews diesel everywhere! :)
 
No I don't have a kit per se, just part LR009732, but I guess without the crush washer.

LRDirect confirmed the crush washer is indeed the part I thought was an o ring, MYX000040, but they don't carry them.
Waiting for my local Stealer to reply before testing my Google fingers.

Still not sure about that attenuator thingy, if its lodged in the fuel rail is this normal and is it easy enought to remove or is it a case of removing the fuel rail as well?

So part MYX000040 is indeed called an o ring and local stealer had a couple in next day for me. A couple of quid each.

The mushroom shaped machined metal object with the hole, came out with a magnet, not lodged in fuel rail at all, however the replacement is exactly the same size as the original so with a shorter fuel pressure sensor, this is never going to seal.

Three of the crush washers/o rings would take up the difference between old fuel pressure sensor and new shorter one, so I thought I would try it to see.

Haynes manual states fuel pressure sensor should be torqued to 38nm. This snapped the damn thing in half so I won't be doing that again, and I am now back with the original sensor nipped up (not torqued). No leaks.

Anyone able to offer any help here please?
Is there a kit containing all the correct parts so a shorter replacement seals properly?

Hi guys. Exactly the same happened to me, fuel ****ing everywhere after installing. Just one question do I need some sort of special socket to gain access to fuel pressure sensor as my sockets are not deep enough to use? Manage to install it with some pliers... Really knew it wasn't going to work but was the only tool I had that would "suffice". I did remove the cover but was still hidden under 4 pipes.

i managed to remove the sensor on my freelander with a 27mm box spanner. replaced shorter sensor with longer one and, i still havce same problem...but then after reading this thread i see i may of missed sommit.
 
I know this is an old thread, but as I replaced my fuel rail pressure sensor yesterday I thought I would take some pictures to show the difference in the attenuator length.

Old sensor and attenuator is on the left of each picture. You can just see the original crush washer on the original sensor.

To summarise the process:

  • Remove all the usual hoses and plastic gubbins. You may also want to remove the EGR as it makes it a lot easier to get to the sensor.
  • Disconnect sensor from harness
  • undo sensor
  • undo retaining nut
  • use magnet to remove original, shorter attenuator
  • fit new, longer attenuator
  • fit retaining nut, nip up.
  • fit crush washer on new, shorter sensor.
  • *carefully* insert sensor, making sure you don't drop or dislodge the washer.
  • tighten sensor. You will feel it tighten, then "give" as the crush washer deforms. At this point be careful not to give it the "full Garth....argh" treatment - it needs to be tight, not split in two ;)
Reconnect harness, refit all the plastic gubbins, check all your hoses (don't want to go out for a test drive and blow a hose off...... that would be embarrassing).

Hi all ive just joined this forum. I've bought a freelander sport td4 2005.the engine management light came on the motorway AA man put computer on and fuel rail sensor fault came up . so I've had the sensor changed and the wire harness. But the eng warning light still comes on with no revs same fault on computer as before. Please please help.
 
Dredging up an old thread from the past…

I’m currently looking to replace the fuel pressure sensor in my TD4. Look around at various sellers, some are stating that there are two types of part LR009732, and the the shorter body versions will not fit where the longer part is in use.

Reading this thread though, it looks like it is possible to fit the new shorter versions as long as you do so replacing the accumulator that must be supplied with the new version.

Is my understanding correct? And as long as I buy an LR009732 that comes with the longer accumulator, and washer (as many seem to be pictured), I’ll be ok?

Thank in advance to anyone that is able to confirm.
 
Just fitted the newer shorter sensor to the fuel rail, and no leaks.

I think reading all these posts made it seem more complex than it is. Basically it seems as long as you buy a new sensor in a kit that has the washer and the longer additional collar fitting it should be ok. It looks like where people (including some LR techs it would seem) have had problems, is if they either get just the shorter sensor on its own, or don’t use the new longer collar.
