My TD4 had been running well but has now started with problems again. Namely it runs well for a while then the tick-over can become uneven in traffic jams as if there is some fuel starvation, sometimes the engine will even cut out.

After messing with the fuel lines under the bonnet, ie. shaking them, the engine will start and be fine for a while with smooth tick-over until the problem starts again. If I push the fuel lines down (even without kinking them) the engine will also stop.

The fuel filter was changed a few months ago so I do not suspect this, could it be the fuel pump or should I replace the fuel lines? Any ideas anyone? anyone else had this problem?

Thanks.

From what you describe, the low pressure side of the fuel supply is struggling to maintain pressure to the high pressure pump. Assuming that the fuel filter is good as it's just been changed then it will probably be a fuel pump problem. Does the situation improve if you fill the tank? if so then a good clean-up of the pump may sort it.

Thanks Dan, actually I have not checked if filling the tank eases the problem but funnily enough the tank is due for a fill-up. I am pretty sure the problem is related to fuel pressure though.
