I know this probably sounds stupid, but would this be possible ?
And if so howcome it isn't more popular.
I mean on paper it seams like a reasonable idea ( to me anyway :p )
extra power, torque, smaller engine size would maybe change its tax rating too ?
looking on fleabay, a 2nd hand tdci is about £2000, where as you can get a more powerful TD4 for only £700ish.
If you were able to put one in, would the original gear box/ clutch etc be able to handle it or would they all need upgraded too ?
Cheers

Hi there, TBH i don't know if it is physically possible but maybe one reason is that there are plenty of TDI engines out of rotten Discos. I know there is a it to do with getting the plumbing sorted but I am sure less than putting a Freelander in. Got admit though I think it would make it cracking Defender on the road but maybe not so sweat off road.

Cheers

the mad hat man: I don't know, that's why i'm asking people who probably know a lot more than me ! :p I've seen such a variety of engines (from v12 jags, to huge v8 diesels) put in the defenders, i thought i would be able to take almost anything.

Bluemeanie: how would it not be so sweet off road ? As long as you keep the low range box in. it's not as if freelanders are terrible off road, just not as good as other landys :)

I was thinking about something similar to this but maybe putting a disco td4 into a defender or even the engine from a freelander has anyone done this?

Easiest
200 / 300 TDIs

Will fit with some work
TD5

Stupid idea
Newer 4 cylinder engines from LR

As to TDCI, lots of work electrically, and you can buy a much better engine for less (TD5)

Yeah after doing a bit of research the td5 seems to come out on top so I think I’m going to buy a decent donor car and go for it I’ll keep you updated
