td4 fault ??

Hi Folks,
Im new to this site, i have a 2004 td4 and have owned it from 7000 miles, now running at 65000.
last year I had the engine management light coming on when doing long journeys and the Landrover people found it to be the turbo wastegate had seized, so new turbo and parts plus man hours left me with a 1304 quid bill.
anyhow ive now got a bit of power drop when at a steady speed of around 60, it just seems to drop off slightly, someone say it is due to a little filter somewhere at the back of the engine which never gets changed due to lack of knowledge.
can anyone help with the name of this filter and where it is or how i can fix it.

Thanks, Darren

im getting a warranty through tesco now, only 259 squid.

a little filter hangs (or should be clipped) on the end of a small bore rubber pipe just below the maf sensor above the turbo.

looks like a fuel filter with just a hose to one end.

think it's a vent for the boost control solenoid or egr vacuum piping.

Here it is

Freelander TD4 : EGR Air Filter on eBay, also, Land Rover, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 13-Jan-09 16:24:25 GMT)

If I were you, I'd quickly disconnect the filter & run without it & see if that cures it. If it does, then renew it. Also check the whole length of the small rubber hose which goes to the turbo & also to the egr valve & check for any splits etc.

It's called a turbo boost pressure control valve vent filter

it's also worth changing the crankcase vent valve filter which sits under the injector fuel rail

both the turbo boost pressure control valve vent filter (the one you're talking about, cost about £3 from LR) and the crankcase valve filter (about £23 from LR) should be changed every service

thanks, I think i might buy myself a Haynes manual to try and see what you all mean, im not the best under a Bonnet. any photos you have of where on the engine i need to be would be appreciated..

Ta

don't have a pic but you should be able to see it now you know what your looking for.

in line with the oil filler cap look down behind the engine almost half way down below the air filter housing and maf sensor.

it hangs vertical from a hose that may (should) be clipped to other hoses.

This is a very usefull page below on Roverrons site for general servicing.
The vacuum filter you have is located at the back of the engine between the bulkhead & Air filter box (it actually clips to the airbox). Look on the link at the Changing The Air Filter section where the diagram/picture shows the location of the 5mm Hex bolts holding the cover on. Your vacuum filter is right beside the left hand rear hex bolt.

i have removed the 8mm braided pipe to see if that helps with ypassing the egr as roverron mentions. will try and fit the filter when it arrives. thanks

Remember to block the pipe with a tight fitting bolt or similar as the vacuum is also used to operate the variable vanes on the turbo apparently.

although good, the haynes manual doesn't have a picture of either of these items, but just hints to where they are.

however, if you do a search on this fine forum, there are pictures and instructions for both
