Facelift td4, 96k, has new front fuel pump, erg bypass, roveron box, roveron maf.
Recently done all filters apart from fuel.

I have fuel pressure sensor bypass kit from l/r but not fitted it yet. Have had random issues starting in past and usually a wiggle of the pressure sensor wiring sorted that out.

However today cut out on roundabout and I had to tow it home.
Charged it up and battery seems to be holding charge and charger says alternator running ok.

After a number of cranks it finally caught and ran, albeit a bit rough - I know one glow plug lead has snapped so it is rough on cold days until warm.

When switch on ignition, can hear rear fuel pump whirring.

Was running ok, let it get bit warm and took it up the estate and turned around (100m) got back opposite my house and cut out again. Just engine warning light with explanation mark on. Will crank but not fire.

Suggestions and ideas welcomed!

Left it on charge overnight to see if it helps, but I'm not holding my breath!

Until you actually change the fuel filter there will always be the thought / possibility that it is at fault.

The pump running does not mean that fuel is actually getting through.

The age of the filter is irrelevant as a bad batch of fuel (supermarkets are the number 1 culprit) can easy choke any filter, in my experience.

Perhaps fitting the fuel sensor kit you mention might be the answer.

Have you checked the turbo hoses carefully for splits?

Good luck.

Hi,
What's a fuel pressure sensor bypass kit.

It's a l/r replacement loom that runs from fuel pressure sensor straight to ecu, rather than running all around engine bay. Obviously brought out due to problems.....

hi change fuel filter and is the low presure pump OK? and it is possible even though you can hear it pumping the high pressure one(in tank)? is faulty and will pump on tick over but not providing enough fuel for full running hope this helps

How to test the rear fuel pump?

Any advice on changing the filter? I have heard it can be a pig!

UPDATE:

Changed the loom and cleaned up the fuel pressure sensor contacts with emory paper and then filled connection with special silicone/grease stuff to keep moisture out.
Also changed the rear fuel filter and put some injector cleaner through fuel tank.

Been fine for past week or so until this morning!

Started ok, ran very roughly and then cut out and wouldn't start and idle.
Called out recovery company who managed to start it immediately with some fast start.
His suggestion is air in the fuel line, small air leak somewhere and fuel is draining back overnight. Suggested gettin a pressure test on fuel system.
Ran engine for 10 mins and seemed ok, then drove to work and it cut out on last bend so I had to coast into carpark :(
Doesn't seem to want to start again! Grrrr Bloody car!!!!

Can anyone offer any ideas or suggestions on anything else I can try myself?

I don't want to just keep swapping parts but I'm starting to lose the plot.
Spoken to a local diesel specilist this morning but he can't fit us in for a week!

Hi all
Wondering if anyone can help me my freelander 03 td4 cut out on me and wouldn't start again, towed it home went to push it into the driveway and I would give it a try and it started drove it into the drive and left it run from 10 mins and turned it off. The car is near 100,000 miles so I thought the fuel pump under the rear driver side arch was on the way out so I replaced the pump and the fuel filter and tried to prime in but no joy, I found that it wasn't sucking from from the tank and I am not sure what else to check and hoping someone can point me in the right direction
Cheers Kevin
Also after the fuel pump was fitted I tried to turn the engine over and now try the the engine light on but think caused buy low fuel pressure.

Maybe worth pulling the pickup pipe out of the tank and having a look, there is usually a gauze filter on the end, I presume the landy would be no different, and these can get covered in something that can only be described as looking like snot..
I've known this in the past to be the cause of several running and starting problems, mostly starting and running and randomly cutting out or misfiring.
Maybe worth a look..

hi all
thanks for the replies i looked at the link hd3 and checked sender unit filter it had a little snot on it but not covered and the new fuel pump wont suck from the tank, i didnt think that could fail and i havnt had the problem the person in the link has had just not starting and cutting out. but its the only thing it could be, where is the best place to get one and what would you call them.
cheers kevin

it had a little snot on it

starting to sound like diesel bug :

guess you could pm the poster of that thread ( previous link ) 'n ask ..

hi there
is the diesel bug a big problem in diesel cars and does the treatment work
cheers

is the diesel bug a big problem in diesel cars

probably not so much in the uk at reputable fuel stations .. ( at a guess )
all in all it's going to depend on the supplier .. and their storage tank maintainance
and work practices .. quality of the fuel in the first place .. etc etc ..

i think it's more of a problem with larger storage tanks ..
and fuel that's left standing as-it-were ..

so might be more applicable to HGV's .. boats .. and such

but that don't rule out .. for cars ..
a bad supply of fuel .. and / or a car that's been left standing for a long time ..
depends on the conditions .. .. temperatures .. moisture content .. etc

no harm in protecting a car fuel tank against the possibilty .. given how it can screw things up ..
also worth draining that sedimenter once in a while ..
( be a plug under the body by the rear offside wheel on later model td4's
( that's designed to bleed off any collected water in the fuel ..

most diesel engine systems will have some way of draining off collected water from the fuel
or if they don't .. they should have ..

.. and does the treatment work

that diesel rhino ?

rekon i could only answer that by dismantling my engine and fuel system 'n checking it over :)
and / or .. get some water contaminated - bug contaminated fuel .. add the additive 'n see what occured ..

however .. it used to go under the name 'diesel-aid' .. and was produced in conjunction with an american company

back in the late 70's i was driving artic-hgv's across the usa for a contractor .. and he swore by that 'diesel-aid'
having been in the business of owning and running hgv's for umpteen years ..
main problem was the potential for moisture in the fuel to freeze up and block filters ..
( north american winter temps being what they are )
so he had me using 'diesel-aid' for that purpose ..

he never had any problems with contaminated filters .. 'n engines always ran fine with fairly good mpg
no injector or pump problems ..

fast forward to 2012 .. and i bought my td4 ..
so one day i googled 'diesel-aid' .. and that uk supplier popped up in the results ..
smell't the same as the 'diesel-aid' i used .. had same claimed qualities ..
somewhere down the line it changed to 'diesel rhino' .. as to why .. the details are on a blog somewhere
( i read it but didn't save the bookmark ) .. .. had to do with business legalities and whatnot ..

all i can say .. i use it .. am getting good mpg 'n motor is running tip-top ..
( but that may not have squat to do with 'diesel-rhino for all i know )
as some LZ folk are also getting the same mpg .. and engines are running fine ..
but who don't use 'diesel-rhino' afaik .. although they may be secretive about it :)

if it does what it claims regarding moisture in fuel .. and combating diesel bug .. i'm happy with it ..

hi there
the freebie can sit for a week or so not getting used and it proberly a good idea to use the diesel aid but i cant find a in tank sender unit for less than 300
cheers kevin
