Hi all,
Hope this is the right section to post in, I've come across an old series that has been off the road since 1994 but no one thought to tell DVLA, I.e. not declared SORN. Does that mean that if I try and use it on the road again I'm going to get clobbered with tax payments back to 1994?

I'm fairly sure SORN came in long after your vehicle came off the road. So it did not / could not be sorned. You will only get nabbed for back tax if you use it on the road before you tax it. And I believe you would not be responsible for back tax for the period you did not own it. If you become the new owner you will need to tax it or SORN it straight away.

No, I helped someone with this who bought a bike that had been laid up in a shed for years. When SORN came in they only sent reminders to owners with the new V5s, vehicles where no reminders were sent (this seems out to be most if not all that were off the road at the time) are exempt SORN (or rather exempt the penalty) until they are on the new V5. You can apply for a new V5 free, the change of ownership will get you that, after that it will be in the system and require a SORN or tax.

I have a bike which came off the road approx 1993 / 1994. I got it in 2004 and registered it in my name. After I restored it I only ever used it on the track, never on the road. Since I have owned it I have kept the V5c up to date. DVLA changed their paperwork a couple of times, at least once I had to write to them to ask them to reissue the V5c after my other vehicles had been reissued with the new v5c's. And one change of address. The V5c is still up to date but never received any renewals for tax and never been asked to declare SORN. I understand it will only be subject to SORN rules if it ever gets taxed again or gets a new owner. Which might happen, I keep meaning to return it to road condition one day (and it will be tax free anyway).
