Just bought our first Freelander and the tailgate door won't open. Has anyone got any suggestions? With the car unlocked, when the door relaease is pulled the windopw drops as it should, but nothing else happens.

Where are the motors / actuators and wiring for the door release?

Thanks

Steve

hi if you squeese the handle put your head near the badge you should hear 1 micro switch operating the window and a noise like well hard to explain but its a solenoid operating the rear latch after the window drops, you can get the inside panel off bit hard with door locked,at bottom of door panel is 4 philips screws take them out and then the panel pulls from the bottom up,cut round water shredder and you can operate latch manually to get it open then check to see if micro switch in handle is working its not a rear wiper fault or window fault as they work, the relay for the rear door latch and the rear window are behind the offside rear quarter panel 3 connectors for rear door electrics, the relays are up by the seat at top,its not normally a relay issue either rear door latch solenoid,or micro switch in back handle but rule out the handle as window works hope this helps.

Thanks for the help.

You were right, the interior trim is a pig to get off with the tailgate shut, but once it was off, I was able to trace the fault.

Getting the doot open still isn't easy. I used a tent peg to get hold of the latch mechanism after I'd loosened the covers.

For info, the tailgate loom had chaffed on the rear quarter pillar and the purple/blue cable going to the latch motor had been cut.

A 10 minute repair to four other cables and half an hour to put it all back together.

Hi 540iv8

i have a land rover freelander and i was wondering if you can give me some steps on how you opened the back door using a tent peg if it not to much trouble cos i desperately need to get my back door open

many thanks if you can

Me to. Rear tailgate will not open. Window is dropping as is should when I operate the handle, but nothing else. Got rear panel off inside. But dont know how to open lock.

Help PLEASE.

I have a 98 R reg Freelander Station Wagon that is in showroom condition except for the damned tailgate. It will not unlock and the window will not drop. Everything else works like new. I have checked the service history and this problem has not affected the car before so I guess it must be quite okay for the regulator to last 12 years. That said it is still very annoying. Why did they not build in a manual override system? Why not just leave the tailgate operation manual? Cars are just too complex these days with all the electronic wizardry stuffed into them. I have checked the fuse. It is okay. So, can anyone help me? I have bought a new regulator/cable assembly. How do a I fit it when I cannot open the tailgate? Is there some way I can remove the near side rear panel to access the latch? There has to be some way to open th etailgate without causing any damage. Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Rhodiejeb

HI All, I have herad about a RAVE disc. Is this as usefull as people say, and if so, where can I get one. I tried searching eBay but had no luck. Thanks, Rhodiejeb

Hi All, On one of the postings someone said stick th ekey in the tailgate lock and press the 'open' button. I did and it worked! Thank you. It even worked to lock the tailgate again. So, at least I can get the door opena dn locked until the new regulator assembly arrives. Thanks again. Rhodiejeb.

Hi All, Rhodiejeb.
now rhodie has used the search function and he trawled through mabe 20/30 or more or less and he found the answer.Ithink he must have also found the nasty comments from the non gaylanderers, who start throwing the toys and dummies outthe pram because the op didnt use the search function,go to the introduce yourself section and had the nerve to come in here without so much as a hello :D.i dont do lol,but if i did i might type it more.

you group know who you are.i have ventured to post in the defender section and was rightly told to **** off back to my gaylander section.Fair enough i have no buisness there till i give up on my trusty Lseries.

Most of us in here are first time landrover owners, please give us some credit for trying to keep the ****ers alive.

My thanks also to Nathan5346 for th einfo to the dowload. You knwo what still angers me is in our village there is a Land Rover franchise holder. I went there for some advice before I read th einfo I needed and explained th eproblem to them. Typically they breathed in through their teeth and told me the regulator was poked and it would cost £250+ to get a repair effected. I went away and decided to investigate a bit more and that is when I found this site, trawled through and found the solution to my problem. Now, that Land Rover franchiser MUST have known this way to get around the problem so I could at least open the tailgate but offered no advice. They would probably have taken my landy in and made it look like they had done something, but really done nothing, and stung me £250+. Since taking the advice on this forum everything works as it should - thanks. One problem.......I now have a brand new tailgate regulator and cable assembly that I don't really need. Still you never know.....one day.... Thanks again. Rhodiejeb.

hi ,i have got td4 3 door kalahari, i have what seems to be a common fault from checking this site, rear door wont open and window wont drop ,i followed some of the tips i have read and hoping that someone can point me in the right direction ,,every time i locked the car i was gettin a beep signalling an open door ,,i disconnected the battery and left it 10 min ,reconnected the battery on trying the internal switch for rear window was gettin a series of beeps from dash, but window did not drop ,i them tried to open rear door and hey presto the door openedbut the window didnt drop, then i had the problem of trying to shut the rear door with the window up fully,i got around this by lifting the hard top up about two inches ,got someone to shut the door and let the roof down very slowly, when i lock the car now ,no beep from the horn, but rear window still not operating, can anyone point me in the direction of what might be best way to rectify this ,,many thank

Even before I jump through the hoops and introduce myself on this forum, I want to say a big thank you for this door-opening tip, that worked for me too. (I know it was a hundred years ago when you posted it, but still..) Darned thing had a hissy fit when we hit customs inspection at Tunis La Goulette, and you can imagine how that went down. Thank you thank you thank you!
