Just bought galv chassis with S3 axles and with RR diffs, I have bought and refurbed 11" brake backs and drum (to put on the front, its a S2 rebuild) and now want to assemble it all. for peace of mind want to replace the bearings seals etc while its stripped down,
i think they are 10 spline on the axles but 24 spline bits that came with the brakes/swivel/ stub
what do i need to check and what bits should I replace / keep.
    Any recommended kits to use.
I have a Hayne manual and PDFs of all S2/S3 parts and Nos.
    all comments appreciated, thanks

Pull the end off the flange and check splines

Wheel bearing kit is £30 inc VAT and I used some Japanese bearing make instead of Timken as the Timkens were silly money and these are just as good

Wheel bearings are all the same (no idea on rationalised axles) but before that the same wheel bearing is used from series one to series 3

Took the old stub axle off and cleaned that up ( no oil seal ) along with the ones I bought that came with brakes and swivel housing ( with oil seal ) doing some digging about and they are from either a 109 or post 80s 88.why does one have an oil seal and the other not, can I use these when I get some 10 spline flanges and marry them altogether on the 10 spline shafts. All the seals I have found quote for defender, are they the same

Later axles 1980 onwards has seals in the stub axles and the wheel bearings relied upon grease for lubrication as axle oil does not flow through. The stub axles on later models did not have the removable land where the seal runs on. The later stub axles are extremely expensive as pattern parts are not available.

Thanks for that, the set up is the TLE brakes from a rationalised axle (109 24 spline) reading up it says wheel bearings are a RR item, are the wheel bearings the same, these also have a stub axle retainer? are you familiar with this set up, trying to figure out the order in which the brake back plate fits, I'm assuming its stub axle then the retainer then brake back plate ?

earlier axles used 2 different sized wheel bearing per hub later do use the same as rrc and defender and discovery rtc3429 x 2 per hub, it would be stub ,backplate then retainer

I tried it that way and the retainer was really close to the brake springs, whats this oil catcher as i don't think i have one, so the stub axle with TLE brakes will use RR bearings?

you either have 2 bearings the same size and parallel stub axle or 2 different sized bearings and stepped stub axle
