Hi all,

When i went outside this morning to check on my defender i noticed that there was a puddle of oul running from under the front passanger side tyre, on further inspection it looks to be coming from the oil seal at the back of the hub, has anyone got any idea if it is just the seals that need replacing or is it a more serious problem (e.g. swivel replacement or cv joint)

thanks for everyones great help as always

regards robert

the swivel housing should be replaced as its started to corrode, which is odd for a part mostly in contact with oil? Maybe it was stood for a period of time. Its not a hard job to replace the housing and the seal but does require the preload to be re set. Im sure there is a 'how to' in Busters section, very usefull even if its in a different language

Yep you need to replace both swivels (about £70 each) and the seals but make sure you buy genuine seals as pattern part ones wear out within a year!!

If your a lazy bastad like me you could drain the oil from the swivels and put one-shot grease in instead, as it doesn't leak out so easily, saving you the job of replacing em :)

Thanks for the advice, great as usual, i stripped the whole thing out and found that the swivel pin bearings had collapsed due to my aunt over loading it with bricks when she borrowed it to take rubble to the dump, cost of repair £95.98 for the parts, just replacing it all just to be safe
