Do I take the risk and use the one without the hole?

I think you'll find that the hole was just for the tailstock of the lathe that was used to machine it. I'm wondering if the one without the hole was made on a cnc mill and didn't need the help.

Either way, on the one hand the hole doesn't do anything and the unsullied one will be fine, but on the other there's not likely to be any wear on the old one - send the new one back!

I'm doing a full rebuild of the swivel for the sake of like £20 i just want to replace everything and be happy with it for another 5-10 years.. if the seals hold up that long

I've never seen one like that - and I thought I'd seen them all! Seems odd that although it would work as a breather it's also going to let in water and all the abrasives that might come with it.
What about the purpose for wading? It's the lowest point if it goes swimming chances are it's going to let water out? but that said.. oil / grease with it?

Nothing to do with wading. If hole all the way through that is wrong. Swivel housing is sealed when in good order. Breather is pipe on axle.

Yeah that's what I agree with, if oil can get out.. water can get in.. rule of thumb

That's what threw me off.. FRC2894 if you have a look on ebay with that part number there's a few with holes?
