Freelander 1 Sump removal quick question

Going to fix the leaky sump in our 1.8 tomorrow.
Can the sump be dropped without removing exhaust downpipe?
What size socket do I need?
Is it a Torx type socket?

RE. No you don't,even if you can remove with a bit of mess,when you want to put back would be impossible.

10 mm socket

well with out looking at the wife's car I had a look at the Haynes manual it says remove front pipe the lower tie rod is secured be three bolts remove them and allow tie rod to swing down unscrew the six bolts securing the intermediate reduction drive unit support bracket to the sump , remove the two bolts securing the sump to the gear box casing ,Progressively slacken and remove the bolts securing the sump to the base of the main bearing ladder then break the sump joint by striking the sump with the palm of your hand, so if I was you I would take care of your hand LOL hope this helps

I for got to say when doing the bolts back up here are the torque settings sump to gear box 45 NM- 33lbs sump to main bearing ladder the M* x 25 are 25 Mn or 18lbs the M8x60 are 30MN or 22lbs and sump drain plug is 28MN or 21lbs in according to which torque wrench you have hope this helps

Thanks guys. I read the Haynes manual too but they often tell you the "correct" way.
No torque wrench. Just be doing it by feel.

I don't split the downpipes from the manifold. I find is better to unbolt the manifold from the head and lower the whole assembly. This gives enough room to remove the sump. I find that often the downpipe nuts are often rusted solid, so I tend to avoid undoing them.

Cheers nodge. That's why I hate splitting downpipes too. Think I'll give that a try.

Right... just for the record. I'm not doing that again!
