Hi Guys.

So i brought a lovely 300TDI Discovery, and i want to take her off road and get a little muddy. with my partner in crime Ryan Day1.

whats sort of necessary things will i need first,maybe the best place to get them?

I run insa turbo traction trac in 265/75r16, which needed a bit of trimming and were OK on the old RRC police spec springs I had, but replaced them with a 2" lift kit from terrafirma and it's good. They're very good on the farms I drive around on, especially when we had a lot of rain and mud a while back.

I think spacers would help the turning circle though!

You'd do a lot worse than spending dosh on decent jate rings and some recovery gear, the trimming the front valence off before it gets trashed.

I found a big difference in mine after changing all the axle, gearbox and transfer box fluids to full synthetic. If yours haven't been done for a while then it will be quite a difference. All reasonably cheap things to do...

Common sense?

Seriously, it seems the thing missing the most at Prick & Prat sites.

If you've never driven off road before, then maybe some tuition, or at least go with someone who is experienced and capable.

Where do you plan to off road?

Sensible things first, check the condition of the vehicle. Make sure it's safe and sound for off roading.

Make sure the handbrake works well, could be critical if you need it on a steep slope.

Good, SAFE recovery points and a good kinetic rope. Also read up/watch vids on how to perform safe recoveries.


Standard Land Rover's are very capable. On dry terrain or solid terrain even road tyres will be fine. Although if it's wet or muddy it may be sensible to equip the vehicle with some sort of suitable tyre. And you don't need Insa Turbo Special Tracks to count as suitable.

A Discovery's biggest weakness off road is the overhangs front and rear and the risk of damaging the bumpers. However, point 1, common sense should help avoid any issues in this regard.


Other things, make sure you know how to operate your vehicle, what low range is, diff lock. How you should hold a steering and what you should do with your feet off road, i.e. never drive off road with your foot resting on the clutch pedal.
 
New insa turbos i think he's got, no lift to go with em yet, drives it on the daily, excuse me butting in... i get excited
You do know Insa Turbo is a brand, not a tread pattern FFS. And if you mean special tracks, they are probably the worst tyre to run unless you need them for competition purposes.

And you don't need to lift a Disco and people that usually do, usually make their vehicles perform worse off road as a result. Usually not even knowing why or how.

I'm no expert but I think under body protection is a good idea - especially if it's your daily driver. If you dent a body panel you can still drive it, if you smash a diff or bend a steering arm/panhard rod then it's a bit different.

Depends how wild you plan on going I suppose!
