Hi all. I'm new to 4x4 and am the proud owner of a Freelander 1 Td4. Really pleased with it BUT.. parked up by my caravan with passenger wheels on gravel and drivers on grass. It rained all night. Tried to get off and all I got was the drivers front digging to Australia and no drive to the other 3. Is this normal as I thought Id have no problem or am I being a bit thick (normal for me) any advice would be good. Thanks

Do you have any footmats to put under the wheels to help get some traction ?

Pretty much. 4wd is a bit odd on a Hippo.

If you still have a rear prop (have you looked?) Then drive will increase to the rear as the vcu warms up with the front wheel spinning.

The rear wheel on the grass should spin as well....or hopefully give enough traction to move.

I would have thought one of the rears should have been spinning at the same time? That's assuming previous owner hasn't removed the VCU / driveshaft (they can be prone to failure and the 'bodge fix' is to remove them if the VCU is seized.

Out of interest. How long does it normally take for a vcu to warm up enough from cold to provide drive to the rear?

Will there always be some drive to the rear if the front spins?

pretty quick, you can feel it with a bar if you try to trun it fast ,there will allways be drive to the rear as theres no center diff but without traction control 1 wheel at each end will leave vehicle standing

Hi. Thanks for all your thoughts, Yes I have a propshaft, I have booked in to Bell engineering to have it checked out properly, will let you know the outcome.
