What's the deal with storing fuel in a lockup? I'm thinking of switching to biodiesel, but the nearest place is about 2 gallons of driving away. I'm thinking of getting about 10 jerry cans and filling them up as well, to save on the number of trips I have to make. Is it legal to store it?

pretty sure it is ok,
mate of mine had the customs lot come to dip his tank after a neighbour said he was using red diesel(which he isn't) he has some containers of diesel in his garage and asked the cutoms chappy about it and he said no problems with that.
Plus farmers usually have diesel tanks on the farm for red diesel so can't see it being a problem:)

OOP'S

"Storage of fuel at home or the workplace (unless specifically licensed) is restricted by law to either metal containers with a maximum capacity of 10 litres or approved plastic containers of a maximum 5 litres capacity."

I had over 50 litres in jerry cans in my shed when I drained my last Disco's fuel tank (car was written off), and that was after filling up the courtesy car's fuel tank!

The limit is a relatively new restriction. It used to be that you needed to be ASDR qualified to transport say 50l of fuel in a single tank, but you could stick 10 jerry cans in the back of a transit, and no-one bothered! :D Not sure whether bio-fuel comes under the same restrictions tho'.

A bit late for them to hassle me about it now as it was nearly 3 years ago, could you get prosecuted for carrying fuel now though, as I've got 20L jerry can's?

Technically, yes - and they could do the garage that let you fill them too! But unless they had reason to stop you and search vehicle..then not likely. I routinely carry 20 litres tractor fuel, 10l for my pick-up, and up to 20l unleaded/2-stroke for collection of strimmers/chainsaws. There are further restrictions btw about vehicles without bulkheads!

Food for thought, I didn't realise garages would get done too, but I've always secured and covered any fuel can's so as not to give plod a reason to hassle me. Starting to realise why I got the 20L jerry can's cheaper than the 10L ones:doh:

Went to the biodiesel place today and filled up for 92p per litre. They we quite happy for me to turn up with lots of 20L jerry cans.

Took 40L to fill, so about 2/3rds biodiesel at the moment. Exhaust smells a bit like a chip pan, although not very strong. A fair old puff of white smoke at startup, and then runs clean from what I've noticed. Driveability seems unaffected so far.

Its not just the storing you have to worry about - legally you can carry the following:

10 litres in plastic approved carriers, with a maximum of 5l in each carrier

20 litres in metal approved carriers, with a maximum of 10l in each carrier

I've never seen the rule enforced (who carries a half full jerry can!?) but i have been stopped a few times filling up more than one jerry can at a petrol station.

I guess Diesel is a lot safer than petrol though!

does veg oil count as fuel? I could say i eat a lot of chips...

;) my mate has six of them big fuel bowsers in cages full of fuel in a lock up , its bio he has made and every few days he fills up his LR from them, its all personal and he wont sell it , so i presume as bio is not flamable etc etc its ok to store, same as storing engine oil , besides the point i wouldnt class filling three jerry cans up as a LOT of fuel, if im out mowing and strimming or chainsawing, il carry the same amount in the trailer,

get yer self one of these
