Hi Landy Folks!

I was helping a friend fit a replacement stereo to his '96 TDI re-import (Japan) and we came across a bunch of things we weren’t expecting!

It would be great if someone could link me to a wiring diagram for the ’96 Disco so we can have a look, other than that specific issues are as follows:

1. Dual co-ax Arial inputs, we’ve wired one (Main) and it seems ok, what’s the “sub” input for, do we need it?

2. Perhaps it’s a fault, but all of the 4 door speakers operate without having the “-“ connected at the stereo end i.e. coloured “+” wires only. This did not make much sense to me unless there’s a short. Obviously if the “-“ was removed at the speaker end it stopped working.

3. With the above the stereo sounds fine (new JVC etc) on both CD and Radio, but when the vehicle was started there was an intolerable interference (rather like a poorly suppressed AM unit) on both radio and CD. Before I start thinking about fitting aftermarket chokes etc, I’d rather ensure the existing wiring was correct.

4. This one will probably be answered if I can look at a wiring diagram, but I’d like to wire in the speaker in the back / boot door. It appears to be a powered subwoofer, am I right?

Your help would be most appreciated, thank you in advance for your time.

Happy Motoring, Russ.

I had a really hard time running a system in my Disco 1 its a 95 and I replaced the head unit with a $500 hidden fold away Kennwood and I replaced the front two speakers with Pionner 6 1/2's I had to cut into the door and I replaced the back two that are above the jump seats with 6by9's also pionners and I again had to cut out the cardboard they hooked right in to the stock wireing I then replaced the gate speakers with 6 1/2 pionners and I then hooked up a infinity 12" with a 500watt amp it sounds great it is soo clear I havn't herd a clearer crisper system I just added last night some JVC home speakers I hooked them to the amp and it adds a little more "bump" thouse have four tweeters on them. I have a total of 13 speakers in my Disco 1 and it sounds really good it was pricey to put that head unit in b/c the disco's have a stock amp system soo I had to add a CIT box that is what they call it I think and it put less amps to my speakers. with out it it made a humming sound like it had to much juice. If you have any ?'s about putting a sytem in your disco1 95 let me know I was throught it ALL!!!

Thanks OBIE, sounds like you really went to town on your system! Do you have a wiring diagram for the Disco? Or an explanation as to why the speakers work without "-" connected at the stereo end. Or why we have the humming on both cd and radio when the engines running? Thanks, Russ.

http://carstereohelp.net/wireharness_LandRover1.htm this will help you out with the diagram. I have no Idea why the "-" is that whay I just connected it to be safe. the humming is a bare wire touching the inside frame there is a metal frame the keeps your head unit stay tight and sometimes a bare wire touches it and it is grounded out by the frame. and you hear engine nosie all you need to do it look at your wires and put some electrical tape on all of them and keep trying it until you find the wire. I took me 6 times of taking it in and out until I fixed it. later down the road I had soo many wires in the back that I guess when I turned on my heater it mealted one of the wire insulators and touched the bare metal. one thing I had to buy was a little converter box I think it was a CIT box I'll have to check but I had to wire my CD player into that and then wired the box into the stock harness. I had to add this because there where to many amps going to my speakers and (my CD player was to powerful for the speakers) this creates less amps to my speakers and makes a crisp sound. it was about $40 (american) soo check your wires and I'll check and see the correct name of that converter box I hope I helped if you have any more ?'s just post...Obie

That's great Obie, many thanks for your time and effort, I'll check re bare wires and appreciate the wiring diagrams.

Just the job!

Russ.

There is a small wiring diagram in the haynes manual if you can get hold of one.. I have replaced the head unit in my disco and it was no big problem. At first it sounded a little "tinny" until i realised that the rear door speakeres are subwoofers, and are powered by a built in amp. On the back of the origional head unit there was a place for a long thin plug which is fead by 2 small wires, black and red. These are the inputs for the amp. Providing that your new unit has pre outs (phono sockets) the plug can be simply cut off and replaced by phono pluggs. The system in mine sounds great now. Plenty of bass and good mid range. Hope this helps a little...

Hi accywingy,

Thanks for your advise, I note the sub inputs on the wiring diagram Obie forwarded, not as a long thin plug, but as part of a connector block. I will play with connecting this to the phono outs, presumably as it's a mono input, it should not matter whether I use the red or black phono out?

Thanks, Rusty.
