Been reading lots of previous step posts. Can't find an answer. I need two steps into my 2 door defender 90 pronto, as I can't fashion a stylish entre and exit. Engine changed to 3 series, so tank position to be considered. Are there any steps or tread bars on the market which don't need a) the tank taking off to be fitted, or b) hacking and re-welding the steps to fit?

Why have you put a series 3 engine in to a defender?What chassis is it, series 3 or 90/Defender?

You may need some help in calling things what they are, rather than what you think they are ... getting spares is difficult unless you give correct information ... or you end up buying a Chevvy turbo for a Peugeot ....

I'm working my way through the pdfs on here slowly - time constraints. Mind you, "You may need some help in calling things what they are ..". Not always. If I've nowt good to say, I try and say nowt.

Don't the standard folding steps fit? I think so.
The chap I bought it off bought said not. It was going to cost him £400.00 for a welder to rejig the steps he bought. I emailed Craddocks today, and this one will fit. The problem with it is, it's flush to the floor of the car. I was looking for a step up.

Not at all.
The fuel-tank was fitted under the seat on all 90's right up until the TD5 and side-steps were widely fitted so unless he has done some kind of modified tank (why?) then standard steps will fit.

@Mackers Seriously, mate it's obviously very important to give an accurate description of your vehicle otherwise it makes it very difficult for folk to help you out. This forum is awesome. However, the problem with any forum is that the communication is via typed posts. This is not as fast or efficient as talking face to face, where clarity can be achieved far more easily. Post a picture of the engine and we'll be able to tell you what it is. The age of the vehicle will narrow down the original spec. The VIN number off your V5 tells you exactly the original spec. To be super safe, don't post your VIN number on the open forum. However, you could send it via a personal message to one of us. (white envelope symbol top right of Landy Zone page and it's called a Conversation.
As has already been said you should be able to fit these LINKY TO STEP
This is the standard type step fitted on Defenders. Although my originals had a support bar that went across to the main chassis rail. I've got long side steps, similar to the ones in your picture, fitted now.
I think we're all wondering how you can't fit steps!
Why don't you post a picture of your fuel tank and we can see if it's standard or not?

That is indeed a 300Tdi engine. However, it is confusing to accompany it with the word 'series' as this was used to describe the early models of Land Rovers. The word series has been used in a few of your posts and so it's creating a bit of confusion, IMHO.
That fuel tank arrangement looks standard to me. In fact, I can see a hole in the chassis rail that looks like a bolt hole. I reckon my gear box cross member bolts through there, but I suspect the support bar for my old step was probably fixed via that bolt too.
These pictures aren't great, but they are the best I've got.
Drivers side step and you can still see my fuel tank above it.
This is the passenger side and you can see how the step is bolted to the inner sill and you can see the support bar that goes across to the chassis rail.
I can't see why you can't fit one of these steps. They are much lower than the new long steps and certainly split the difference between the ground and the Landy floor.
The pic's under the Craddock steps to the left. I uploaded rather than copy paste, or it's the file size that might thumbnail it. I agree with you. I was just conveying what the seller said to me on Saturday when I bought it. Then the chap at the garage I took it to (albeit when I told him what the seller said). He said that it'll be because the tank goes further back, but not to worry because they have a great welder. Who knows? Maybe the chap I bought it off had bought a big fancy pair with bigger brackets too big to clear the tank? By questioning my posts (thank you) you might have cleared something up, better saving me from being ripped off by a garage by questioning what I've been told by others. In addition, where others have used the word 'series' to me, you have suggested 'series' is confusing (thank you). If I had my facts straight you wouldn't have taught me something and I wouldn't have learned :0) Try not to get frustrated with people who aren't as expert as you. If a patient said "I've got a sore food pipe, an itchy arse and my head won't fit in the bog so I can be sick", a good GP wouldn't reply with "It's an esophagus, oesophagus (if you want to be pure English), anus, crack, bum or s&*T hole ... and don't be stupid! Your head is like a pinhead and would fit in any toilet or latrine on the planet, even one situated in the en suite of a bedroom in a doll's house". I'm learning, but there's no way I'm rote learning a 50 page pdf glossary of mechanical terminology before I ask a question on this forum. I've only just learned the emotion faces. Looks like you're doing a proper job on your car btw. I bet it'll look brill when it's finished. Also, with these steps (which I like best), does the brace arm go through the diesel tank?
