Hi Guys, Just bought another Disco and the steering feels strange as in it is reluctant to self centre after turning a corner/bend and the wheel has to be manually fed back to the normal position, and just to mention it has had a new oil seal fitted to the steering box and there is no slogger in the steering, any ideas boys.

Get it up on axle stands and then turn the steering wheel.

See if it is very stiff , then as above check everything for stiffness.

What state is you steering damper in?

Cheers

As @neilly says, get it up on axle stands and swing the steering. If things do feel stiff then you could break the system at the drop arm from the steering box then you should be able to check whether everything is moving freely on the steering gear attatched to the front suspension, drag link, track rod ends, top and bottom ball joints, etc. or whether the apparent stiffness is in the steering box and steering column side of things.
If you suspect that one or both of the two small U/Js on the steering column are the source of the trouble, then I would advise using a proper releasing/easing oil such as PlusGas and not WD40 unless it's their special releasing oil version. Supermarket WD40 won't really do much except make the joints smell nice. Then try spray grease, but you're going to have to be very careful to work the grease in as well as you can.

thanks for the invaluable information guys so I will start with the easiest column uj's first then if that fails she is up on the axle stands, once again thank you boys.

Hi Wammers, I tried spraying the column uj's with no effect so went on to ease back the steering box adjuster and reset it until i just felt contact then road tested her and Hey Presto as good as new, Iam absolutely over the moon so keep up the good work boys and many thanks.
