disco 1998.when turning the wheel i can hear a grumbling sound which is worse when it is fully locked. is the pump on its way out if so is it hard to do. also the steering wheel has lots of play in it and it drifts side to side on the motorway not related to pump issue any advice welcome thanks

not sure about the play thing but pump aint all that bad to to.

have you tryed bleeding the system 1st as the noise could be ait in the system?

have you checked your levles in your pas resovoiur? or had to top it up?

check the pas pump aint leaking oil, to find the pump follow pipes from the res to it, check there is not a lot of red oil on her or some on the ground where she sits. if there is you may need to change her any way as it may be letting air in.

check fittings are not loose or leaking (dont do them up ft just check they aint loose)
check steering box aint leaking again oil under her or on the floor.
they are the main places it will leak oil/let air in.

is it a disco 1 or 2?

if you find a wet area ( ie the pump or box) clean it off with brake and cluch while the engine is cold, then start the engine and let her run for a bit, turn her off and inspect to see where its comeing from, if its not leaking try from lock to lock and try again.

least you will see if its comeing from a union or a seal

i think it could be the steering box because there is oil patch underneath where i park.if the steering box has had it that might be why it drifts on the motorway.will do the checking you sugested.thanks for help.
