The important thing is to centre the steering box drop arm, see RAVE. You do this with the drag link and it does not affect tracking as that is controlled by the track rod. If the wheel is off centre when the steering box is centred then it's steering wheel off to centre that.
adjusting the steering box play is also covered in RAVE.

ive got an issue- my steering pulls to the left a bit, front passenger tyre is work on the outer corner, and another tyre has issues, and i just wnated to get as much as i could out of them over the summer

had new track rod ends fdor last mot, he said il need "track rods long" soon , now need a new steering damper

so il get track rods long, steering damper, new tyres...then whats the best way to set it all up and ensure steering/dring line is as good as can be ?

Set track. (Adjust track rod). Centralise steering box. (Adjust drag link). In that order. See RAVE for instructions. I've typed instructions out a few times, i ain't doing it again.

have you got a link to a previous instruction ?

i wont be doing it myself, hence cant use rave really as my mates garage will do it so il be taking it there, and could do with just giving them some instructions to ensure all things are done

to adjust pas box make sure box is central (it doesnt matter if road wheels or steering wheel isnt but box must be )then rock the uj on input shaft by hand as you feel freeplay been just removed ,steering wheel can then be set ,while pas box is central either by removing a uj on linkage and reffitting when wheel is correct or by removing steering wheel itself either way dont let wheel steering whel spin freely if disconnected , road wheels can the be adjusted by drag link to reset steering wheel straight when run down the road

just a few pics of a spare steeering box i have of a p38
pic one top of steering box 17mill nut with allen key in middle i undid the nut and wound the allen key down it seemed to stiffen the steering up a bit

pic2 iundid both of these clamps and wound the center nut round to put my steering wheel in line

there is a pic of the end of the steering box with like a flat line on it is this what you line the steering up to to center it

The adjuster should be would in a tiny bit at a time then the steering rechecked, even a slight over-adjustment will knacker the box.

yes ,rock it and if too much play you can feel it adjust till just gone ,if box is not central there will be freeplay so if you adjust it there you would be forcing it to be to preloaded as it went through the center giving steering issues and premature wear
