Steering angle sensor

Hello everyone.
I was searching to see if anyone had posted any info about replacing a 'steering angle sensor' on a 2002 L322 V8.

I hear its a 6 hour job by the book, but i have also read on RR.Net some german guy can do it in one hour with assistant .

Please, if anyone has any experience of this procedure i'm sure a lot of us would find it very useful to have a low down on the exact procedure so as to avoid any pitfalls.

I need to do this asap, as i think it is the root cause of my Eas/Hdc/Abs and ASC warning lights.(Tried usual calibration, lock to lock, no luck.? )

I had it on an independant diagnostic machine and it stated that the 'brake lght switch' was ON when fault occured and also the steering angle sensor ECU has an internal (infernal) fault....

Any advice would be appreciated as i just can't afford a big garage bill at the moment, i'm pretty good with spanners.

I was crapping myself over the HDC/ABS/EAS etc warnings being caused by a faulty SAS...mine turned out to be a dicky ABS Sensor....all the systems are linked and failure of one will render the rest up the shoot...

Check your sensors and get it on diagnostics first!

There was a member on here a few months back who replaced his steering column.... can't remember his name....do a search it may reveal something!

The ex used to scream at me to let me know my steering angle was too enthusiastic, i upgraded to a much less sensitive and far better built one and now the driving experience is a joy again. Not the cheapest option but worth the change

thanks for that Saint.V8, i do have a grating noise from the rear (oo matron) so will do sensor check, don't usually go round back so maybe BigSi can give me some low down, LOL

Has no-one done angle sensor?
I am going to try and read lable on it to see if it is same as Bmw X5 as they seem cheaper, much cheaper.

Also, most posts about it talk of removing column, but apparently if you can just undo it and have a m8 support it you can change it easily enough.

Also, on RAVE manual, it is located on bottom of upper column, ths in turn is a sliding fit onto lower column, i'm thinking of dislocating a joint and lowering upper into lower thus creating room to remove offending ssensor,

Doubt it will be as easy as all that, notwithstanding the probable contortions required......

Just needed faults clearing, all working tickety boo now..

A very honest guy called Hamish only wanted a tenner, but i stuffed a twenty into his cleavage,,,,,
he really should get those overalls mended........ i'm still waiting for my change as well...

The golden rule with the L322 is to get it on diagnostics first....oftentimes the faults are spurious and caused by a hiccup or low battery volts during cranking...and all it needs is a reset....

been looking for a satnav ''cd '', as mine doesn't have one. Same screen as yours, i also have headrest screens but can't get them to play, they do switch on though.. im aware of possibllity of water ingress but it seems dry in side cuddy. I fooking hate electrics so if you could fix it purely by shape shifting or Esp, i'd be eternally grateful.

oh, and i've got a slightly low bag......lol

N/S/R ? prob leaking. Pulls a bit to left, tracking all done!

I've been thinking about my angle sensor being diagnosed as have an internal fault,then the fellow Hamish saying that was not the case......

Makes me bl@@dy mad

ALWAYS get it on diagnostics first, as SaintV8 advocated,,,,
and try and get a NON greedy technician to check it out.

I also advocate any L322 owner getting their own diagnostics device, be it the Faultmate, Bearmach, Lynx, All Comms or IIDTool.....plus RAC/AA/GF membership

These are complex cars, and in order to save yourself expensive visits to a garage who will only fix by substitution and racking up the bill....the best advice I can give anyone serious about owning a Range Rover of any vintage is to read up and learn the systems, read all there is about them, to be a regular visitor on the forum, to learn and listen to advice and read and re-read RAVE over and over and over again....

Garages know they are complex and that the usualy owner knows little about them so they can bandy long complex words around and bamboozle the owner into thinking the faults is super complex and this gives them the right to wrench the feck outta the owner for repair costs.....

Learn the vehicle, learn the systems, get diagnostics...and ASK....

Crumbs a faultless Rangie, it needs to be in a museum.

sadly i was being ironic, although i never iron....

But engine purrs, Eas works, wheels go round. Hdc and low range works, heater works, windows and mirrors work gearbox works etc...

Dvd don't work although it has power and screens turn on..? Don't have a satvav disc... anyone got a satnav *cd* they can throw my way?

Going to do front 'rear' bal joints this weekend, hope the thing doesn't fall on me!!! :boom:

Good luck with that, so far mine has just been front air bags and compressor. So I have the further joys of ownership yet to comeop2: I'm off to Norfolk tomorrow, so hope I haven't put the mockers on it.

Ball joints and front pads done today... Blimey, pads were boogered but felt fine?
£18 for pads, £28 for 2 front lower ball joints. Also bought rocker gasket set for £40, might do tomorrow, im sick of oil burning smell. YES, i have done PCV valve and the little fooking hosed, what a bl@@dy task that was, i needed an old rear view mirror to see where they connect to drain tubes. Old one were mush. Big bore ones were newish, so some garage probably didn't fancy a wee delicate fumble, OH, it never fell on me cos i used 2 axle stands and the jack, don't risk it without at least that, i still have the scars of a car fall on me 20 years ago, the image of my father running out to save me in his PANTS injected some humour to the situation.

Darnation, i forgot the all important emoticons, im slipping up :doh:

20 years ago,after the 'car falling on me' incident, i bought a set of axle stands..... and i vowed that i would strive , save my pennies, build a garage large enough to fit a proper hoist in etc etc....

Well guess what guys, ......... my axle stands need a respray and i'm still borrowing driveways .:hysterically_laughi
