Refurbishing my 1997 defender 300 TDI

Who are you doing it for?
I have a disco for myself that's turned into near enough a nut n bolt rebuild then there's a lady on a farm who looks after my dog when I'm at work who had a sorry looking 200tdi pickup in the barn. She'd been ripped off by con artist welders/mechs so many times and couldn't warrant paying for a restoration so I offered to rebuild if she got all parts.

So you're doing two at once. Busy time A good dog minder is well worth looking after. Plus, you get more rebuild fun ;)

She only has him a day a week at the farm to be fair but the fender would have sat rotting or been broken for parts. Id rather see her get enjoyment from it as she lovrs the thing.I'm in the office all week nowadays so enjoy getting out up there when weather's nice. Nice spot to be. Peace, radio, landy and coffee. Old before my time haha
 
Bulkhead is in very good condition but is still being removed sand blasted and galvanised
Don't blame you. The chassis someone posted earlier in the thread looks great. Id love to build on top of a galv chassis. One day. This will be a real keeper when restored I'm sure!
 
What's the best way to mark my Chassis number on a galv chassis (any way without damaging galv) ??
 
I believe you only need to show continuity i.e. a correct paper trail matching numbers etc
I've got the receipts etc for mine, massive collection of pictures of dismantle and rebuild and I cut the VIN number off the dumb iron, with an angle grinder, and kept it. :)

Thinking about wheels ????
The final bit of the refub will be wheels, Do I maintain my 30mm spacers or go back to STD ? I'm erring for STD with black sawtooths

No problem.

The load on the bearings can be a bit of a misleading statement. Depending on what wheels you have fitted now, and what you fit after, you could end up with an increased negative offset, and therefore further away from the bearing than with the spacers. It’s a bit more complex, but worth a read if your struggling to sleep one night.
 
Stripped further now, post sand blast bulkhead is to be repaired and galvd (new footwells already owned)

I'm fitting reconditioned gearbox (higher 5th ratio 0.732, HD rear bearing) and transfer box (1.2 ratio & cross pinned) and was going to use standard fluids, anyone got any alternatives based on their positive experiences
