Starter whining then wont turn off???

Evening went to the Landy to give the missus a lift this aft turned the key and the starter started whining turned the engine off and it still kept trying to turn over with it off?? Went back 5 mins later and nothin as though the battery was flat? Thought its like the car out the Stephen King film Christine!

Iv searched on here but cant see owt like this anyone any idea? its a 1992 200tdi

Yeah thought it was the starter-it started fine this mornin then just as i got to the lights on the 3 lanes the engine cut out!!

So had my first experience of pushing my 90 instead of driving it!

Some good samaritan helped me get it to side of the road anyway!
