Just trying to replace the starter on my 99 DHSE. The lower nut holding on the starter is solid. Almost lifted the car off the ground trying to move it and it then slipped, slightly rounding the bolt. I applied Plusgas last night and again just now. How can loosen this bugger off as I cannot get a ratchet on and I do not want to round it any more. Is heat the only option?

Assuming that the other is just as tight how can I get that one off as its near wiring and I don't want to melt anything?

You have learned something by this. Never use twelve point sockets or spanners on tight fasteners.

Wammers, I cannot even get a socket or a ring spanner on the nut as the clearance between starter and nut is too small.

The other nut wasn't as tight so has moved.

This is NOT the way to spend a Sunday!

Thanks, drilled it in the end and chiselled it off. It still didn't want to come off as it was really corroded on to the thread. Don't think unbolting from the other side would have worked at all given how stuck on it was. Will need to order replacement bolt and nut. Also to top of a cr4ppy day the starter supplied was the wrong one. So need to go back and get the right one on order.

Yes it was Grrrrr, luckily there was plenty of room to get a drill in place, think I would have been in tears if I couldn't have. Totally fed up with the whole situation, what I thought would be a job that would take couple of hours (starter and glow plugs) is now drifting into days as I don't get home until its dark so cannot work on it until next weekend and need to source parts.

Now looking for a replacement bolt and nut as bolt was also damaged when removing nut. Its the yellow hardened steel type and struggling to find a replacement, would a garage have something like that? Also it looks like the starter supplied was the right type listed but the wrong one in the box.

Yes, took me about hours to get the starter off when I dropped my gearbox. Made it seem like I was going nowhere.

Nights are drawing in so emergency work only soon. About time something went bang!

Not sure about the bolt. I'd just measure the length and width and buy a stainless steel one. @MrGorsky seems to get them from a fasterner place somewhere near Heathrow, I think. Don't you work down that way somewhere? If you took the old one in you could probably get a straight replacement.

Thanks, I went to the guys at Dingocroft in High Wycombe. I couldn't recommend them enough. They spent about 20 minutes trying to get the correct bolt and nut required which they did and all for £3. I felt a bit bad giving them so little money for all the effort they put in.
