Bit late .......:D

Already did it at the weekend. As you can see from the OP, already ordered the solenoid kit and knew what the problem was. Surprised that the starter came off easy enough. Just remember to use a short 15mm socket on the top nut.

The contacts were fubarred. The plunger itself was not to bad, But it got replaced anyway.

One thing to note: Not all the plungers available are the same diameter, Original was approx 37mm the one in the link above is 37mm but another kit I purchased was only 34.8mm measuring the copper contact ring.

I couldn't get top nut off so decided to change in situ. Luckily the one I received was same as the one that came off and contact were very worn. Couple of times almost got stuck in work as it took about 10 minutes to get it to turn over
 
I realise this post has been out there for a while but pretty topical seeing as I've spent so long under my disco the last 2 weekends. I spent ages trying to get the top nut off with every combination of ratchet extensions and UJs. I still ended up rounding it off, so had to leave it there. I bought the solenoid kit off ebay for £8 so had to put it on in situ. Its a bugger to get to because of the confined space but its possible. The only thing I would do different is to reuse the nuts that were on the solenoid contacts. The original ones were a bit deeper than the new ones and on the far side bolt it was really difficult to get a spanner in and make it tight. I tried to take it off again but I just couldn't get the leverage on it. It will probably loosen over time, I just hope its not in the middle of nowhere.
Well that was my first post over with. Hope my experience will help someone!

Hi mate, just saw this and hope it's OK to wrote.
I was hoping to get some help identifying where the starter motor actually is...
I know it's rookie but I am one. Do you have any images or diagrams to identify it...?

Under the drivers side of the engine, attached to the front of the gearbox or autobox bell housing.
It is a right sod to get off, so I put up a thread about it.
As soon as I find it I'll put up a link.
Lots of pics of how to replace the contacts, the kit you need and the method to use to get the barsteward off, although others joined in with their own methods.
As usual, there is always more than one way of skinning a cat!
