Disco 3 (LR3) Spraying a spare set of alloys Matt black

Hi all,
Just a quick one. I have a spare set of alloys for my D3 that have no curb marks but the paint is pealing on all of them. I've bought a new set of tyres for my "good alloys" and I'm going to swap the usable tyres on to the old set. My question is can I, after peeling the flakey bits off simply spray these alloys Matt black and use them for off road? Will the paint last? Your thoughts?

If the existing paint is peeling, you would need to remove all the peeling layer (eg strip the wheel) as anything you put on top of it wont stick it down, but will stick to it... and then when the base layer peels, it will still be stuck to it - but just not on the wheel any more!

If theyre for off-road, im wondering why youre bothered? Surely theyll be covered in grime anyhow?

Thanks for the reply it's a red disco so thought it would look good with black alloys that was all. I was thinking, peal the flakey bits off and just spray the whole wheel black? Will it stick without the hassle of sanding the lacquer off.

If you, basically, just want them black, and don't care about a half way decent finish, just rough them up a bit with sandpaper, and have at it with a cheap rattle can.

It will start falling off fairly soon, but so what? If you've only put in 20mins and a tenner on paint, just do them again when they start looking too rubbish?

In fact, why not just brush on some cheap aldi metal paint?

You can touch it up as you go then.


Really, I know it may seem like I'm taking the p155, but I'm not - don't always need a fancy solution, if you don't care about the finish.

Note - my defender I paid for 2k, etc. My ex mod 101 is done in dulux weather shield!

Get them blasted and powder coated... Get some quotes as if there not curbed it'll be will worth it in the long run

It will work out at leat 40 quid a corner to pay someone else to do it, I think.
