The last week or so I’ve been hearing a spinning noise when slowing down. I can hear the noise slow down with the tone of the engine. The noise isn’t loud but it sounds dry/metallic. Sometimes it doesnt do it at all. Gears change lovely, no knocks or bangs.

Any ideas?

Anyone else that may suggest/guess, experienced this? I’d describe the spinning noise as a tinging than dry metallic.

Maybe start of Syncromesh wear? Without hearing the noise difficult to say, but mine does make a noise that I would describe as you have, and I know the Syncro is going.

I’ll try and record it but it’s not very loud at all. It changes gear smoothly which is why I’m stumped.

Always worth a look at the propshaft UJs, they frequently produce metallic noises when about to give up.

Had it out today to record the noise but it’s too quiet. It doesn’t do it from the word go. It can happen at any time during my drive. Tingy/Metalic spinning sound that goes in time with the engine either when accelerating or decelerating, with or without clutch down, and you’ll hear it more just as you’re about to stop, the spinning noise stops. Another way to describe it is like having a piece of paper on a mud guard and spinning the wheel. A mild duff flapping sound.

Jesus I sound like a nutter! It’s booked in for Wednesday.

I had what sounded like similar noise which would happen when slowing down coming to a stop, in my case in the end it was bearings in the LT77 gearbox shot so had to fit a recon. When i got it out though the bronze spiggot bearing in the end of the crankshaft was also knackered I am told these can make strange noises when loose. Have you checked / changed gearbox oil. I fitted the recon gearbox a few weeks ago and since then I have now become obsessed with noises and rattles like it some kind of disease. I had a bad rattle in time with the engine when driving which made me think I had problems with the transfer box but figured it out today when I put the storage box in between the 2 seats a longer bolt was touching the top of the handbrake cable was all it was.

Funny you mentioned handbrake. Just confirmed by mechanic that my handbrake drum had accumulated rust and was causing the spinning grinding noise. He showed me the noise occurring by quickly and gently lifting the handbrake whilst wheels spinning. Getting it all cleaned now on ramp.
