So someone decided yesterday that there need for my spare wheel was greater than mine!
The wheel was a standard boot alloy with the original old tyre. This was fixed to the rear door carrier with a locking wheel nut.
Is there a decent security option so that it does not happen again?

Oh Jeez what a pain in the ass. Sorry to hear that.
I guess a standard locking wheel lock is pretty easy to come by for the thieves. You don't really want to be chaining the wheel against the car either

Other than fitting a swing away and chaining it to that there is not much more you can do other than a locking wheel nut.

Ive got two locking wheel nuts and two cheapo bicycle cable locks on mine, make sure to crowd some grease into the lock keyhole otherwise the thing will be seized when you need it!

Agreed, locking wheelnuts are not a barrier to anyone who wants the wheel.
I have always wrapped a decent motorcycle chain / padlock through my wheel / carrier.

Can you divulge your county so at least we know where this thieving is going on? I have a locking wheel nut on mine, and its a brand new wheel and tyre. Bastids, put a product search on ebay to see if it pops up.

I did think what we need is a long pin with a large head that passes through the wheel bolt hole then through the dooor skin itself via a grommet to stop rattling and a padlock in the cabin, easy and clean to remove and refit and pretty tough to steal unles they actually start breaking into the car itself.

Bought one of these off a bloke in the pub, he said "tuck it behind the wheel and simply attach it with a wire to the spare" simples
