Hi and Happy New Year!

My 2001 TD5 was sluggish as hell when I first got it. So I did the following and now its running much better, but its still not quite there.....I am convinced its a fuel issue and I am happy to fork out on a new pump if thats what you guys think is needed, let me know what you think? Cheers!

  • New Air Filter
  • New Fuel Filter (seems much better after this)
  • Cleaned MAP Sensor (big improvement here too)
  • Cleaned MAF Sensor
  • Oil Change (two filters)
  • Gearbox Oil Change
  • Blocked off EGR Valve (nothing too noticeable)

I've checked the Red Connector in the ECU and its dry but there is oil leaking into the first (?blue) plug on the injector loom - do I need a new loom?

Thanks again!

If there is oil in the plug at the head you need new loom, unplug the MAF and drive it so, if it's better you need a new one, cleaning sensors might not help much if they doesnt read well, how are the turbo hoses ? if they are soft you need new ones, check the wastegate to not be stuck... anyway, the only relevant thing is a live data log

Thanks, I'll see if I can get a Data Log to upload. I'll invest in a new loom now. I meant to say I checked the Waste Gate and it seemed fine, lubricated it anyway and turned the arm in two turns so whether that also contributed to a reduction on over boosting I am not sure?

Do you think it worth investing in a pump anyway? I took it out yesterday and the mesh needed a bit of a clean but nothing that would slow anything down.

Main symptoms are she struggles on hills, suffice to day I'd hate to be pulling a trailer up a hill at the moment - but not having drive3n a TD5 before I am not sure if I am expecting too much.

Then do that too:

Depends what you mean by "struggles on hills with a trailer". Obviously pulling a trailer especially a heavy one, up a hill, will give the engine more work to do. I do this a lot and on motorways I am prepared to follow the lorries, even into the special slow vehicle lane. But then you use less fuel than you would if it was a V8, even though they go up hills faster with a trailer!!!
But it may be that your MAP needs replacing, or summat else, always take sierrafery's advice, he knows his stuff.
How many threads do you now have on the wastegate actuator rod, cos I am not sure you wound it out two turns or IN two turns. You need 12 to 13 threads between the locknut and the end of the thread. Many fewer and you will have problems. If the ECM reads the boost wrong and thinks you are over-fuelling, it'll put it into limp mode and then towing a trailer up a hill will be murder!

Thanks for the replies and I agree sierrafery is da man! I guess I am not used to having to pretty much floor the pedal the get it to go over 40mph on a hill I am used to doing at least 55 on in the Shogun (forgive my transgression!!!)

Maybe it's running well and it's just a lot more chuggy than I am used to(?)

I've bought a new injector harness and gasket first to try that as it is leaking into the first connector but NOT to the red connector at the ECU ( is there any way of sealing it to avoid it happening again?)

Still feels fuel oriented though if there is a problem.

Ps. The Shogun is going so am I absolved?
