Dealer I would think. But it's possible that the IID diagnostic tool will also update the software, if there's someone local to you that has an open tool.

The files to update my infotainment console for my Renault Clio are avialable to download and then do the upgrade via a USB drive.
Some systems are updated by CD if no USB socket.

Have a good search on the web before handing over lots of cash for the upgrade.

Well the famous steering column locked came back last night remove earth cable f on battery for ten mins and it started exactly 4 months since last time all landrover says is bring it in and we will check it and change steering column which never has locked when this happens has anyone really found a solution for this because landrover don’t have a clue except wanting to charge loads of money for clearly a faulty system

Well it happened again taken to landrover in Colchester who had it ten days and changed the steering column module at a cost of £620.00 but driving home stopped for a coffee flashed up on dash but started straight away but worring after being changed will have to watch it and test over weekend still thinking it’s software issues anyone else had same problems.

Do you know if Colchester updated the software in the body control module and instrument pack or did they just replace the steering lock?

I think owners of FL2s would save a fortune by buying the IID BT from Gap Diagnostics. This unit will fault find accurately and upgrade the software on all module's on the vehicle.;)

I know I'm resurrecting an old thread, but did you get this issue resolved? Would changing the key fob batteries help eliminate this?

What issue are you having? Is it saying the steering column is locked?
If so, there is a fault with the motor, where it has a bad connection I believe.
With a suitable diagnostic device, you can turn off the column lock completely, but obviously the vehicle security won't be so high.

Thank you for your prompt reply.

Yes. It sometimes says the steering column is locked but if I switch off and switch on the ignition again, it disappears. My key fob battery has never been changed as well.

Do you have any recommendations for a phone based diagnostic tool? I've heard of IIDTool but have not come across any others. My car is a 2013 FL2 SD4 HSE. Thanks.

The column lock thing isn't related to the key battery, as the battery in the key isn't used for immobilization purposes. The battery simply powers the transmitter for remote locking.

It sounds like the pretty common issue with the steering lock actuator assembly.
I believe that sometimes, the motor doesn't retract the locking pawl quite enough to activate the lock released sensor.
I found a guide on fixing it somewhere (I think on the Freel2 forum), which was interesting.

Pretty much the only diagnostic device that is mobile friendly is the IID BT.
However it's ability isn't as extensive on the FL2, as it is on the D3/4.
I do believe you can disable the steering lock though, which will prevent the message in the future, as long as the message isn't active at the time disabling.
