Hi, New to all this, but my series 2a 6 cylinder beautiful Landy (my words not my misses) has unexpectedly or not, :) developed a strange noise somewhere down the bottom end. Still drives as it should, noise does not change with revs, hot or cold, acceleration etc etc. sounds almost like its the crank catching or something. Any ideas would be of great help down here in little NZ. Cheers

Hi, yes I know it does seem very strange, The best way I can describe it, is if you think of a clock with hands it "scrapes" on the 9 to 12 as its turning. If it is being affected by revs I certainly cant hear the difference or its not loud enough for me to pick up.

Something caught in the prop, twigs or some such ?

Thanks for all your replies! Work has taken me away but I have managed to borrow a mates garage for next weekend where I can get it on a hoist and have a good look around and I will record it so hopefully one of you fine people can recognise what it is. I have checked all the obvious things like handbrake, wheels, fan etc but they are all sweet as. Hopefully it will become obvious to me once up in the air :)

Right that has taken ages! I put it on a hoist and localised it to some where around the oil pump, pulled this apart and the gears were slightly worn, thought that was it so replaced those but to no avail. I believe it's somewhere in line with the second piston so thinking maybe cam shaft? But really only guessing, still drives fine though it is definitely consistent with the revs ie more acceleration faster the noise so on rotation. Frustrating as

Have you managed to localise the noise, e.g. from top of engine or bottom? Your 1st post said bottom so its unlikely to be the cam. Have you drained the oil and examined it for bits? Also if you can get all four wheels off the ground, try running it in four wheel drive and in hi and low to see if this has any affect

Hi col,

Yes I think I was mistaken to start with it seems its about midway up. Oil has been drained and checked, no metal or bits, I've also checked the timing chain for a missing or damaged link but all fine. Haven't tried the 4WD up on the hoist so will give that a go and see what I find.
Cheers for the advice

Here's a YouTube Link of the sound, I've been driving it all week to see if it got worse and maybe localised it better but no change. https://youtube.com/shorts/FUvC-FxLRt0?feature=share
Hopefully one of you may have an idea :)
I would think that sounds pretty good. I assume the blustering sort of noise is the wind?

Bit surprised that more oil is not running around the rockers and rocker box, have you checked oil pressure at all?

That sounds like a compression leak to me, have you done a compression test? What do the plugs look like? Have you checked the exhaust manifold for leaks?

Yes blustering noise is the wind,.oil pressure is excellent, I have not done a compression test, no obvious leaks around manifold but will give it another check tonight, thanks for all your advice it's much appreciated
