Good morning forum ,
Just after some advice on a new Alternator, the one I have seems to not be charging the battery, tho after a swift blow with a hammer it did send out a chanrge, checked with my multimeter 11.5 before hammer blow 13.7 after !
1. I've seen the Bosch ones for 399 and have also seen this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...:X:RTQ:GB:1123

does anyone know if they are any good ?

Second thing is, are they 'easy' to DIY ? My worry is the tension belt , does it need 2 people / special tool to remove and replace or is it a simple twist of a spanner ???

Im in solihull so if there's someone out there that would like the job im more than willing to pay !

Many thanks in advance

You seem to have found a novel way of refurbishing an alternator. Possibly just needs a new brush set. But pickup rings can wear and make this option hit and miss. Until you look at them you won't know. I can usually stick them in the lathe and clean them. But some are just too far gone. There must be somewhere near you that refurbs them for a lot less than £399.00. You should be able to get a refurb for around the £100.00 to £120.00 mark. Have a look around.

Thanks for that :)
Ive just opted for the OE unit @ 399 from P38 spares.
I remember a diagram, maybe posted on here, of the bolts to undo , does anyone have the link to it ???
Many Thanks
Andy

Forgive me for this please. But silly boy. Cheaper version just as good. First of all before you start playing DISCONNECT battery. Changing alternator is about as simple a job as there is.

All you needed to do was do a search for auto electrical places near you who do refurbs. They are guaranteed usually for twelve months and just as good at £100.00 as the £400.00 one. Would you go to Harrods to buy condoms just because their's are dearer?

mine is well below the belt, more so as when I got home tonight the mulitmeter was reading 14.5 ,,, then 3 hours later again still 14.5 ,,, see the hammer works ! tho i now have a brand new OE £399 alternator sitting in the garage !

As i said earlier. No disrespect but, silly boy. You could if you followed advice have a £100.00 one and not feel quite as bad. Look on the bright side, you could always go green and build a wind turbine with it.
