Snorkel query??

Hi folks, I'm new to 4x4'ing and was wondering what the advantages of getting a snorkel for my landy are? I do some wading, although never very deep, and also drive on hill roads which can get quite dusty (I heard snorkels are great for that too) - any thoughts?

think snorkel and flippers if your heads in water how do you breath! a snorkel takes the air intake higher so no water ingress and up higher out of the main dust thrown up off road.Letting the engine breath cleaner dry air

Thanks for the quick reply! In terms of which head to go for, is there a great difference between a mushroom top or a grill? Is there one that's better for the engine?

I had a mushroom top snorkle from Paddocks (probably Britpart),the powder coating flaked off and it turned rusty. Ive just replaced it with an official plastic Safari snorkle. The Safari is much better.

While we are on the subject of wading ,what happens with your exhaust ,does it not get flooded with water ?

no as the gasses from the engine keep the water from going up the exhaust! aslong as the engine keeps going (and doesnt conk out!) then your ok!

As long as the engine is running, there's enough pressure from the exhaust gases to stop any water entering the exhaust pipe.

I went for a Southdown snorkel, stainless steel with a top that rotates, forward facing for road use and rearward for off-road or really dusty conditions.

I have a mantec mushroom top and have no complaints. The mushroom is designed so that it takes the dust particles out.......alledgedly.

Same here, and found it very easy to fit, also a good buy if your not trying to make one for under £30. I got mine direct from Southdown for £139 inc P&P.
