Hey guys, got my safari snorkel. But before I went to install it I just wanted to check the air vent was sound, ie I could cut the engine out while holding a bag over the vent on my 200tdi 90, but it didnt cut out! It struggles to keep going, sure but still goes.

I have noticed, and not sure if normal (can get pics later) that there is a small gap at the top between the air vent and the wing, cant see day light but still. How can I test to see where the air is getting in, or does the engine not always cut out if you pop a carrier bag over the intake vent.I had it on idle, should I try reving it up more to increase the oxygen demand?

I need water tight proofing on this set up and I dont want to install it if any issues. I take it, if you install, and then take out the self tappers, when you put em back in, it wont be as good as connection to the wing as before?
 
if air can get in, which it must be doing if the engine is still running, then water will be able to get in

have you siliconed the wing join back in ?

blocking off the air intake should stop the engine dead
 
naw, I aint, as wasnt sure if the gap was normal. I guess I didnt want to silicon it up, then find out that was normal and have to take it apart to sort it out.
 
hey I have included pictures this time. I got under the bonnet and checked the pipes out. So I have a small gap around the wing area.

I also was able to easily seperate the air filter and air vent pipe.

I have included other pictures, as well as the pipes that come out of the air filter including the pipe to the turbo charger.
Also included the smaller silver looking pipe to the top of the engine.

If any of these three pipes allow air in, no matter how much I seal the snorkel, it will leak before it ever gets to the hieghts of the top snorkel vent? right, or it it just the first inlet pipe to the filter that maters?

So I could take out the air filter to see more, but what is that black box in the corner (with gen parts only on it) , and can I move the screen wash easilery enough without damage being caused to it.

Should I just take of the pipes and see if I could hold water in them? or is there an easier way. ie leave it in idle and seal air vent and feel around the pipes for air flow?? not sure and would be greatful to know what you guys think.

I look fwd to hearing from you guys. I know its rather simple and basic the way I have gone about it. But, im sure others will learn from this as well as myself.

ya safari snorkel doesn't attach to the top of the wing. it attaches to the side? and ya need to silicone the pipe on the inner wing and the snorkel to the outer wing.
 
that box is your heater, screenwash should be ok...

Pikey is probbly writeing all this anyway, so all i can say is: remember that water particles are bigger than air. so you will never get an airtight system, but so long as you have sealed as much as you can it should be allright.

My roll cage cut through the wing plastics on the inside of the wing and ive just used heaps of silicone there, around the wing. the rest of my pipework is standard and i have been pretty deep (bouyant) with no troubles...

thanks red, can I take this out? or is it best to leave in situ, just it covers up the pipe connection to the wing air vent intake. If I remove it, should I be careful of anything? just a bolt job is it? or are there wires etc
 
yeah side vent, have I shown that im using the top vent? if so, my mistake as I thought the pipe I was looking at was to air vent. Hence the need to remove the heater, cos I cant tell 100%.

yeah griff, I knows that, but I just want to be sure. I basicaly want to be able to cut out my engine when I cover up the air vent, as this is what I have heard. But it doesnt, it stills struggles along when in idle. so thought might have a problem. Not siliconed the air vent to inner wing yet tho. could just be that I guess.

Oh should I silicone the connection at the air filter and air intake pipe? im sure when its connected no water can get it, but I could remove it easy enough tho.

Thats my point Rudd, it will be extremely difficult to cut the engine out, it will suck air through anything, maybe even the pores of the pipework! but thats ok because water cannot get past these bits. if your engine struggles when covered up, thats good enough.

cool. I think cos im sometimes ignorant with landrover stuff, I may read more into the posts on here. Cheers guys. Im now getting my silicon gun and some sand paper, and were out of here!
 
Your turbo pipework looked a bit past its' best in the pictures, it might be worth getting a set of silicone hoses. I changed mine as I could see the pipes swelling as I rev'd the motor so they can't have been long to go before a split appears. I too have fitted a snorkel but haven't done the plastic bag test....mmm... I think I'll nip out and try that in a minute.
 
found it :D

getting bouyant on the Fosse way. only siliconed the wing bits, the rest is original pipework. no problems apart from the landy rocking around looking for traction :eek:

looks lovely that does Griff. is that true that me turbo pipe is going to heven soon? how much be them replacement silicon pipes. easy job right. how did the bag test go?

fooking scientists .....

every snorkel i have fitted has been sealed wel enough to stop the engine when the intake is covered ... that's all i will say :)
 
bag trick dont work, and the job I did on sealing the snorkel in place is a right proper job. My breathers are all clear, were blocked, but no more so cant test that theory.

The turbo pipe looks like black mess is at the bottom, could this mean anything?
