Hi im in need of help....I have a freelander 2 and it struggle when going up a hill really bad . I get plumes of black smoke and the engine management light comes on for a few days then goes off ? would it have anything to do with the air intake and maybe need a new one of these hoses as it looks a bit shabby ?

Hello. It is a freelander 1 TD4 204d3 engine. That hose does not usually fail. The hose that goes from the intercooler to the intake manifold is more common, it is pierced at the rear by friction with the screw that holds the manifold. It can also be a vacuum pipe that does not make the turbo work well.

Check boost pipes, the rubber elbow pipe in the bottom right is a classic failure point. The rubber hose below the fiber hose you marked also fails, as it rubs on a bolt below it.

That engine is a BMW M47R, which was fitted to Freelander 1.

The engine of the Freelander 2 is completely different, as is the rest of the vehicle. ;)

Hi There first off you have a Freelander 1 facelift most likely, maybe that is why you are thinking you have a Freelander 2

What you need to check is the intercooler hoses to the EGR blue in the photo above, check for splits tiny hole etc, also that the jubilee clips are all tight.

hey yep its a freelander 1 ..... thanks and i do apolagies to all for saying its a 2 ....

In your first pic, you've circled one hose with a red outline, freelander 1 TD4's are notorious for holing the intercooler --> inlet manifold hose which in that picture is between the red circled one and the dipstick. as the hoses get older, they sag a little bit, and the underside of the bend rubs on a screw on the engine and rubs through pitting a hole in itself. Have a grope along the underside of that hose and you'll likely find the culprit.

Someone's already replaced the often bad hose, and hasn't put the air temperature sensor back on, by the looks of things. At least I think that was the temperature sensor, not a pressure/flow sensor? I'm old and forget things easily.

If it's on the boost pipe between the intercooler and plastic boost pipe assembly, then it's the boosted air temperature sensor. It makes very little difference if its not connected.

hi all and thank you for your feedback .Well its been in the garage for 2 weeks ..had a smoke test on pipes including vac pipes - no leaks found , Injector number 4 failed and was replaced (had to be removed with special tool £149 !!! )
No change in pefromance !!!!! £550 later

Garage advice is i need a new turbo !

Smoke test may not show a split, as it may be opening under pressure.
Not saying it doesn't need a turbo, but probably not. There's a leak somewhere.
Ask for the injector back, and if the cost of the tool is included in the price then that's yours as well.
If you can get to Birmingham, try Tysley 4x4.

As above ask for the tool it's your seeing you have paid for it, also get it from that garage asap other wise they will be pulling the wool over your eyes even more, find a place that knows what it's doing.

Absolutely.
What kind of garage doesn't have an injector puller anyway?, and if they don't, they shouldn't get the customer to pay for one.
